I would like to ask if it is possible to convert a DVD movie to an editable clip, where I can open up in Premiere and take out part of the clip.
Basically, I would like to take out certain clips from a movie and converting them to an avi or mpeg format.
I will be using Premiere 6.01 for editing the clips.
Can someone please shed some light on this? What can I use to do this?
Would it be a straight conversion? Or is this like a trial & error thing?
I am short on time, and needed this to be done in one day. The total needed clip time is about 2 mins. But the DVD movie is about 2 hours.
THANKS.

So you want to cut out different parts in the movie and edit them in premiere.
I don't have any experience with this but i would use TMPEG. With TMPEG you can make a rough selection of the parts you need by cutting out the rest of the movie (go to settings -> advanced -> source range for this). When you got all the parts you need, encode it to a high quality MPEG file.
And then you can use this MPEG file to do more precise cutting in premiere.

I you wish to do more during the editing process than simply cutting chunks out of the video stream, then I would suggest that you use DVD2AVI to create a .d2v file from your ripped VOBs or your MPEG2 file. Then convert this using VFAPI, and this VFAPI virtual AVI should allow you to either create a Huffy Codec AVI file, or perhaps even be editable in its own right, within Premiere - you'll have to see how Premiere reacts to a virtual clip. If it doesn't allow you to edit, then go ahead and creat a huffy AVI file and edit that. You can then render the file after you've edited it, and transcode it to MPEG2.
Apparently, there are other ways of frameserving to Premiere (see this thread: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=34819&highlight=DVD2AVI+easy2bcheesy+Premiere+6.5 ) but I have never tried them so I can't give you any more detail about them.
To be honest, if time and space are not an issue, the most robust way of doing this is to avoid editing virtual clips/frameserving within Premiere, and create a Huffy AVI file for editing within Premiere. This method may actually save you time and hassle in the longrun, since frameserving can be fraught with problems. Obviously DVD2AVI will have to be used to frameserve the VOBs initially, though, to AVI.

You may want to consider using VirtualDubMod instead of Premiere. Just open the VOB, cut your clips and save them as directly e.g. as DivX AVI. If you want to convert to some MPEG-1/2 format, then save as Huffyuv AVI, which you can convert using your favourite encoder.
