I was just wondering. Why does mpeg1 and mpeg2 take longer to encode than divx. Shouldn't the "newer" formats be much more complex and therefore require more cpu calculating? I am thinking mostly of mpeg1 vs. divx here as mpeg1 can be decoded on a very slow machine which to me signals that it isn't very complex.

Several MPEG-1/2 encoders perform additional tasks like SNR/PSNR analysis and rate-distortion optimization, which improve quality but slow encoding.
