hi. i don't know what i've done but there's something definately wrong with my pc. what i was trying to do was make a firewall for it because i'm gonna get adsl. i was also trying to turn off file sharing but don't think i managed it. now my computer works, but it's very wierd.
k, firstly, in my start menu, in my "connect to" menu, there are no connections, even thought there are two. there arent any visible network connections in "network connections". but when i use internet explorer, it automatically dials a connection. the one i had before. so it must be somewhere right?
i've done a virus check, all seems good.
when i try and open "mycomputer", it shows a blank screen, then starts searching with that torch going left and right, and finally it shows the drives.
i've checked in device manager and there are no conflicts or errors. i haven't installed any new software or hardware.
please someone help me i don't know what i've done.

and one more thing i just noticed. there's no icon in the taskbar showing i'm connected. also, at the moment, i have an adsl modem attached, but no line, and normally there is an icon for that as well.
i think it;s something to do with either my modem or my network card (whcih is joined on to the adsl modem). or something to do with internet security.

What system do you use? What kind of fire wall did you install?
The most problems are that you did not allow internet access to the program.

my system is an AMD 800, win XP Pro.
the only firewall i used was window's one. all i did was right click the connection in "network connections", and enable it there. but i can't diable it becuase there are no connections visible.
i found another problem. i tried to create another user account to see if that one worked, and it didn't. so i went to delete it, but the pc doesn't let me. the account i was using was the administrator. i didn't make a new one. now, it's as if i'm not in an account, and i can't delete the "temporary" one i created. #
the last thing i neeed is a pc to format. if anyone knows how to disable the firewall through the registry please tell me.
btw, Buddy, i don't understand what you said about the progrms not using interent. the connection is accessible, with kazaa and internet explorer and trillian. what program are you referring to?

First I would get rid of Kazaa. This program messes up many computers. You have to uninstall it and get rid of the spy programs in your registry. You can use Ad Aware http:\\lavasoft.de for that. If I'm right there are about 12 spy programs. And many other programs that takes control.
If you want to use a fire wall use Zone Alarm it's free and let you say wich programs has access to the internet and blocks access to your computer.
Do you have an network device in your device manager? And is your ADSL modem there?

firstly, about kazaa, i have kazaa Lite whcih doesn't have any spywear and i already have ad aware.
before i put any more firewalls i want to get my pc running smoothly.
there are two network devices in my device manager. my ISDN card, and the ethernet card. about the adsl modem, it's there, but it's off becuase i don't have an adsl line yet, i'm getting on eon thursdya, that's what i want the fire wall for.
i've thought it's nothing ot do with the modems. network connections are not saved in use files right? so if for some reason the administrator account should "not be there", the network connections won';t be there either. i'm thinking of just getting my winxp cd and trying to fix it but does that work? or should i jsut reinstall windows but keep all my files and settings?

When you install xp again you get a new install loosing old settings. you have to install all programs again. You can try system repair but I don't know how that work.

well i reinstalled windows, holby city took me through it. you only loose all settings and programs if you do a new (clean) install. i did an upgrade, whcih is also faster, and everything works fine. i don't know what was wrong. but i think i'll forget about window's firewall and get zone alarm. thanks for all your help.

k i've sorted it out now. had to do all the settings etc. i have noticed something though. before, wehn i defragmented the drive, there was no green files (system files), it was all blue. but now the green is back. must be a good sign. i really want to know what i did before.

Sounds like a virus. System files does not disappear from there own. That is when you did not delete them.:D

I had virusses from Kazaa a friend of mine lost a harddisk due to an virus from Kazaa. I'm using Ontrack for all of my computers untill now it found every virus.
Not using Kazaa anymore and my computers are clean. Don't be fooled by the light version of Kazaa.

kazaa installs software that can be used to use your computer. you agree to let them install this software and to let them use your computer anytime they wish when you install kazaa.
