I just bought Sony DRU500A. I had Pioneer 104, so i decided to see how the DVD+RW that has works...
I had installed Nero 5.5.8.0 which was (for me) the best version for DVD's, but it didn't recognised the Sony so i updated to 5.5.10.0
I burned the same DVD that i had burned the previous morning with my Pioneer, but when i tried to play it in WinDVD and my DXR3 it was showing a black screen...So i burned in a DVD-R 2x and the same thing...
I was afraid that this was sth with the drive, because i had succesful results with 104, but when i burned with the bundled Veritas RecordNOW , it played fine....
So i guess there's a bug in the new version?
Just to let you know...

I'll try using a different Nero version and post my results...

The latest nero is bugged. Use an older version

I have been using this version without a problem.
I couldn't get an older version to see the drive. This is the reason I upgraded and since then not one bad burn.

So far all I have burned is DVD+RW discs, but all worked fine on my computer and stand alone.

If 5.5.10.0 is full of bugs what version is out there that recognizes the Sony and burns OK?

Though I have not had problems with the newest version, in answer to your question the previous version, 5.5.9.17, worked very well with the drive.

i've burnt dvd-r under the same conditions (DRU500 and Nero 5.5.10). PowerDVD has the black screen problem, but the disc plays fine using NVDVD.

By the way, does this SONY has a function to control at what speed will burn a CD media just like Ricoh?
I have some CD-Rs that are branded at 40x speed yet, my Sony writes them at 4x only...Even though nero shows 24x, it actually burns at 4x(checked it with CloneCD)...
Others brands that i tried burned at 24x(TDK is the one, the other was unbranded)

Also, i had an Audio-CD image (*.nrg) and tried to burn it with Track-At-Once mode and nero suggests that i should use Track-At-Once mode! If i select Disc-At-Once it doesn't say anything...(i tried 5.5.10.0 and 5.5.9.17 for this)
So, maybe the methods are "seen" the other way? So Track-At-Once is Disc-At-Once and vice versa?
