View Full Version : Pioneer DVR-103 updated to Firmware 2 – new CD-RW problem

I have a Pioneer DVR-103. Today I updated to Nero 55.10.0 and also the firmware of my drive from 1.9 to 2.0. Now all of a sudden I cannot write CD-RWs in Disk-at-once. Nero gives error. However I can write the same compilation with Track-at-once. This is a problem because when I want to burn images, they could be written in disc-at-once only and I cannot write them anymore. Anyone knows anything about this or is in my situation with no problems? I know about the high speed 4x-10x CD-RW problems. I’m using normal 1x-4x CD-RWs. Actually the same CD-RWs that I was able to write to with this very same DVD-R writer! Thanks!

OK the problem is more serious than I thought. I’m narrowing down the problem.
With nero 5.5.9.14 or 5.5.10.0 you just cannot write any kind of composition on any kind of CD medium (CD-R or CD-RW) at Disc-at-Once. (firmware 2).
I know some people here have DVR-103 and have upgraded to firmware 2. Please in that case (DVR-103 and firmware 2), if you have Nero 5.5.9.14 or 5.5.10.0 or even any other nero, do a very simple test of burning or simulating at Disc-at-Once on a CD-R! It doesn’t work! Please report your Nero version. Thanks!

It works here. I've written a TDK Reflex 12x CD-R at 8x speed in DAO mode (I never ever use TAO...)

What is the version of your Nero?

This is very strange. And of course you have firmware 2! Right? I don’t know what else to do. I uninstalled and installed several times both Nero 5.5.9.14 and 5.5.10.0 and get the same results. I have windows XP professional.

I have firmware 2.00, but not the hacked one! No need to install it, since I currently don't even have any non-2x-certified discs :D

What’s the hacked one? Why someone would hack it? I got the official one.
No need to install it
Well it’s too late for me and I think that it was written that once done, you cannot go back to an older firmware.

The "hacked" firmware or 2x4all, allows the burning of other media at 2x (media that is missing from the 2x certified list in the standard firmware).
Yes, there is a way to 'downgrade' the firmware. I think it's covered under the Pioneer sticky on this forum.

Latest development, I just tried burning a DVD-RW in DAO and it worked. It doesn’t work with CD-Rs and CD-RWs.

I rarely try burning CD-R/RW's with my DVD burner. If I recall, I never could get it to work properly with DAO before!
I might download Knoppix cd-rom iso, so maybe i'll test it with that. i have Nero 5.5.8.2

atreides: If you have an ISO file (with 2048 bytes/sector) of that, and if it does not work in Nero, could you then please try cdrecord?
Really bad that this writer does not support RAW96. Assuming that the used recording software is not flawed, then this is the mode with the least chance of running into problems.

Ah so I’m not the only one!
Strange discovery. When I switch my drive from PIO to DMA or DMA to PIO, at first it burns fine a nero created image in DAO. (This image gives me the possibility of both DAO and TAO). I simulate it several times and it still burns fine.
Then I try a cue, bin image that I didn't create and it only gives me the possibility of DAO, no TAO. So as soon as I try it, I get the error. The strange thing is that when after this I try the nero image file that worked before, it doesn’t work any more. I have to switch again between PIO/DMA to get to work it.
Here is the content of the cue file that messes everything up (or maybe not)

A Mode 2 - Track with Indices :scared: This is not making much sense iirc, and I don't know if the DVR-A03 accepts something like this.
Delete the index-stuff (except indices 0 and 1) from the cue and try again.

Do you mean something like this?

INDEX 01 00:00:00
TRACK 02 MODE2/2352
FLAGS DCP

instead of the original which is this:

TRACK 01 MODE2/2352

INDEX 01 00:00:00
TRACK 02 MODE2/2352

Yes. If that does not work, remove index 0 as well (it doesn't make sense on a data cd either)

I think I’m getting paranoid. Is it normal that I don’t get the option “Buffer underrun protection” for DVD-R/RW writing but I “do” get it for CD-R/RW writing in nero?

Yes. I don't know why....it is not even supported for cds by this drive.

OK, I pinpointed down the problem. It’s that cue file and once you get an error with that, you will always get error for the others too. I have discovered that I don’t need to switch between PIO/DMA, just rebooting will solve the problem.
I tried to burn that cue file with only Index 0 and 1 and it worked. I don’t understand, could someone please explain what are those indexes and if they cause a problem, why they were used? I got that sample from www.svcdhelp.com and it’s their official ntsc svcd sample file to test your player.

Usually, the indices are intended for audio, to be able to devide tracks into smaller portions.
For data tracks, indices are not allowed per definition (ECMA-130, which describes what a CD-ROM is).
Possible that S-VCDs use these indices, but if this is true, then S-VCDs are not really CD-ROM compliant...
The current index number of each sector is stored in the Q-Subchannel of each track.
It's definitely a firmware bug that you must reboot. Normally, the drive should only reject this one cue sheet if it does not like data tracks with indeces other than 0 and 1.

So some drives could write that but not us, since they made it?

Any drive which supports RAW-DAO-96 mode can write it (the burner does not receive a cue sheet then).
Pioneer DVR-A03/A04 are among very few drives which do not support RAW-DAO-96.
