View Full Version : My SVCD Encoding is slow

I just want to be sure that my computer uses its power to the max when it encodes movies. Each DVD movie it has ripped and encoded has elapsed 9-10 Hours.
Is that normal for a computer with:
1400MHZ AMD Athlon. 512 MB RAM
and GeForce2..
I've heard that AMD Athlon slows down the encodning abit.
But is it normal encoding time for a film that is about 2 Hours long??
Peace!:cool:

No - this topic did not belong in Advanced.
No - that isn't a long encoding time.
Yes - this is a Basic topic.
Yes - you should expect encoding to take at least that long with a system of that age.

@BL_pAstA
Yes, your encoding time is fine.
I have an AMD XP 1800+, and the whole process usually takes around 6-7 hours.

If your encoding time takes between 6-7 hours what are some of you specifications with DVD2SVCD. Like Bitrate? What encoder you use? Do you use CBR or VBR, if VBR how many passes? I have a Duron 950 with but just ordered 640 DDR. But I just ordered a Athlon XP 2100 1.7 Ghz. The whole encoding with the Duron takes 24 hours, will I notice a huge jump with encoding time with the new Processor?
Thanks

Please learn to use the search. There is a Huge and I do mean Huge thread in advanced on CCE speed which is about 90% of your encoding time.

@sasquatch40
Well, to answer your question, I leave the bitrate alone and I do 4 pass with CCE.
Yes, there will be a big difference between your Duron and AMD XP. It should cut your encoding time to at least 5-8 hours. Of course, it all depends on your settings.
Side Note: next time, do a search. There is a 200+ post thread related to CCE speed and DVD2SVCD encoding time in general. Search for "cce speed" and "encoding time".

I'll admit it that I didn't look at the search results first. I just saw this thread and wanted to ask a few questions. Sorry, my fault. I looked at the thread and all have variable encoding times. Such as, .5 up to 2.0 what do these numbers represent? Are there any special settings that should be mentioned about that I'm missing? I would like high quality and if that means longer encoding then so be it.
Thanks for any reply.

Please read this: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=21859
It should answer many of your questions. The number is explained in one of the first few questions.
