I really need your help in detailed instructions on fitting one VCD(a.k.a.) movie, if over 2 hours in length, to one CDR using DVD2SVCD. I have looked at the guide and the instructions were not explicit for this newbie. I reviewed posts back to the beginning of last year and still no success in finding a solution. I have DVD2SVCD 1.1.0 build 1a.

If you could pleaseeee send screen dumps and/or detailed instrctions on changes in the bitrate (or other screens) in DVD2SVCD it would be greatly appreciated. Been fighting this problem since 11/02.

My interim fix was to encode all my SVCDs first. Then I take the ripped files and then use TMPGENC (2.58) to fit the video/movie onto one CDR (VCD)however have had to put up with the poor audio in TMPGENC. I have tried the plugins SCMPX.EXE and ssrc.exe with as high as 224 bitrate (44.1 Khz) but get a "swishy" sound. And using 48 Khz in VCD causes the audio pitch to lower when playback in Pansonic LV-70. And TOOLAME plugin crashes my TMPGENC 2.58. BBSWEET is by far the best audio convertor when used with DVD2SVCD!

Really

I'm not totally sure wether you are trying to make a VCD or SVCD. The following comments pertain, only if you are trying to create a VCD, otherwise ignore.

DVD2SVCD probably does not allow over 120 minutes (it shouldn't allow over 80 minutes for one 80 minute CD) because technically it would no longer be a VCD, it would be an XVCD. The VCD specification has a "fixed" video bitrate of 1150 kbits/sec and also, by the specification it is a "constant" bitrate, variable bitrate is not allowed, nothing higher or lower is allowed. At 1150 kbits/sec you can get approximately 80 minutes onto an 80 minute CD.

To get 120 minutes on one 80 minute CD you would have to drop the video bitrate to approximately 678 kbits/sec. Greater than 120 minutes would be an even less Video Bitrate. Video bitrate has a significant affect on video quality. The lower the video bitrate, the worse the video quality of final product will be.

As far as your audio problems, I'm not really "up to speed" on that stuff. Hopefully someone else will have an answer for you.

Thanks for the quick reply. I had done exactly what you describe before and would still wind up with two VCDs (or XVCDs as you call them). It is like you state, that DVD2SVCD does not appear to allow one CDR for movies over 125 minutes. But some past posts alluded to the fact that this could be accomplished but the instructions were not clear. What I really need are detailed instructions ... i.e. max bitarate, min bitrate, avg bitrate, minutes, CDR length under the BITRATE screen.
As far as quality is concerned you are correct that dropping bitrates detereorates the quality but that is why I burn the two SVCDs first then try to makeup one VCD for the road, where the quality issue is not critical.
Cheers!

Try KVCD (http://www.kvcd.net) .

Saying this, the quality is impared by using a format designed to fit on more media than 1. DivX/XviD are a much better solution.

About 1CD-rip and its quality I've mentioned in the middle of following thread:
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=37904

Generally I use 1-pass VBR/CCE 2.50/Matrix "Andreas SVCD" and reached good or very good quality to:
SVCD 127 min
CVD 145 min
xVCD 200 min
on 1 80 min cd-r (overburned to near 82min)

Thanks HTC ... not clear what 1CD-Rip is but tried some new settings in DVD2SVCD to get one MPEG-1 and still got two MPEG-1 files - one 813 MB and the other was 54 MB. Perhaps I can burn these together on NERO like I did a few other instances. BUT ...
When I compared the sound quality (128 MB/44.1) I found that BBSWEET was poorer (had more phasing sound at high frequencies) than when I used TMPGENC with the upgraded audio plugins mentioned above to encode and MUX a MPEG-1.
Thanks for the inputs!

1CD-rip = one or more DVD(s) to one CD-R
For 1CD-rip it is not recommended to use DVD2SVCD. I personally never used /never installed it. It is only for expert who can squeeze out every last quality from individual program. Otherwise you will not get a satisfactory resault mostly.

Audio compression: I use always HeadAc3he, important to choose "joint-stereo" and 128kb/112kb.

druidmeister
11th January 2003, 15:33
I found that TMPENC 2.58 with SCMPX.EXE and ssrc.exe external audio tool plugins provided fairly good results for 128 and below.

Thanks HTC

As far as the earlier post for DIVX I am not sure how to strip those. Also, there are no DVD players out there that support DIVX ... it is mainly PC playable only. An alternative would be WMA but there are only a handfull of players that will play WMA.

Also, there are no DVD players out there that support DIVX ...the new WinDVD v4.5 Platinum plays divx. But it's very buggy in vcd/svcd(much more than v4.0)An alternative would be WMA but there are only a handfull of players that will play WMA the player which plays wma can only play the audio files in wma format in a cd-rom format, not muxed with mpeg video data.

Hi htc:
Thanks for the infos! I will check these out.

On the road I basically use a portable Panasonic LV-70 as the legroom on some plane flights is prohibitive from opening up a laptop to view some video diversions, especially with the huge laptop I have now. So I am restricted to VCD for the Pansonic which does a nice job of playback as long as I stay at the VCD bitrate standards or below. The only quality issues I run into are the blockiness for video bitrates below 1150 and minor audio pulses and high end loss for less than 224 bitrate.

I basically have DVD2SVCD do the two SVCDs for critical viewing/listening and then take the stripped VOBs/IFO and process these into one VCD separately and independently through TMPGENC.

Cheers!

I think you are audio genius - you can even tell the diff. between 192kbps and 224bps on a PORTABLE VCD/DVD player, even on the road!
For the soundtrack of movie I cannt tell the the diff. at home with my HiFi equipment without 50 times A/B-switch, between 256kbps and 160bps(j-stereo).

druidmeister
13th January 2003, 22:31
Hi HTC:
You are too kind. Actually the main difference that I can hear is between 224 on SVCD and VCD ... not sure why but suspect it has something to with the fact that I encode through DVD2SVCD using BBSWEET) for SVCDs and use TMPGENC's audio plugins SCMPX.EXE (encoder) and ssrc.exe (sampling frequency convertor) for VCDs.

Also have a 24 track digital recording studio. My visit to this site was necessitated not from the need to encode DVDs but for improving on my encoding skills of VCDs for a documentary I did of my trip in 2001 to Latvia, including my interview on NPR there.

You senior guys are admirable from the aspect of the knowledge you are able to convey to novices like myself. Much appreciated.

Cheers!:D

improving on my encoding skills of VCDs for a documentary I did of my trip in 2001 to Latviafor such source it is very safe to use 160kbps/j-stereo for audio. If you havn't visited a orchestra it is also safe with 128k/j-stereo.

Thanks HTC:
As well I have also learned to use joint-stereo VS stereo as JS allocates bits as needed to the channel requiring it rather than fixed rate.

Check whether your burner and player support 90 min. CDs. If so, simply type 900 for the CD size on the Bitrate tab and you should get one image. You'll need a burner capable of "overburning", must current burners are.

Hi RB:
Actually I spoke too soon. The two files max'd out my burner as it can't handle 900 MB. I even bought the 99 min CDRs which it has fits with and a minor cardiac arrest. It can burn the 99s only at 800 MB + Nero overburn.

I will try again doing a one VCD rip/encode again using the bitrate screen in DVD2SVCD (1.1.0 latest build 1C) and only set the number of CDs required and CDR size for the video length I have to squeeze to one CDR. If that doesn't work then I am still doing something wrong.

Cheers!

It may very well be that your burner doesn't like the 99 minute CDs. Have you tried 90 minute CDs?

No, haven't tried the 90 minute CDRs. Would you have suggestions for good sources?

Well, I'm located in Germany, so I'm afraid I can't help... But look out for the TDK 90 minute CDs (http://www.tdk-europe.com/products/uk/recordablemedia/10/). AFAIK, TDK is the only "big brand" company manufacturing oversized CDs. But YMMV. For instance, my standalone (JVC) doesn't like the TDKs at 90 minutes, the only brand that works for me is, funny enough, cheap "Platinum" (don't know if that's available outside Germany).

Hi RB:
Thanks for the lead ... come to think of it I don't think my burner in my Sony Vaio can handle anything over 80 minutes but perhaps you might have some thoughts. I was able to burn the 99 minute CDRs to 80 minutes and anything over that Nero would not accept even up to 90 minutes. I even modified the control limits in Nero with no success. I guess the question would be can I check my burner's limitations using the 99 minute CDR or should I be using the 90 minute to perform the actual test?
Germany, eh? I used to work for TÜV Süddeutschland here in the states as manager and lead auditor for management systems certifications until they laid several of us off.

You can burn over 2 hours movie on one 80min cd-r(see my post above, max. 140min xsvcd and 200/240min xvcd), so it is not neccessary to use the expensive 90/99min cd-r.

Well, have you enabled overburning in Nero as shown in the TDK link I posted (Nero Setup)? Do you use a recent version of Nero?

Nope, that's the price you pay for the low bit rate.

With regards to 90 and 99 minute CD-Rs, Nero recognizes them as 80 minute
CD-Rs. I'm not sure that's a bug as technically the specs for CD discs
don't allow for anything over 80 minutes. What you have to do is put
the disc in and set Nero to overburn to something like 90 min. 30 sec.
for the 90 minute CD-Rs and 99 min. 30 sec. for the 99 min. CD-Rs.
Most burners will burn the 90 minute CD-Rs, 99 minute CD-Rs are another
story. I do not recommend you exceed the capacity of these disks.
What I mean is if you have a 90 minute CD-R, keep your burns to 90
minutes or less. Don't do 91 minutes on them. If you want to try the
90 or 99 minute CD-Rs, I can report that most devices will play the
90 minute CD-Rs, but all bets are off. They don't comply with the
standards, so their are no guarantees. My burner can't exceed 90
minutes or so, so I can't test the 99 minute CD-Rs. I think
(emphasis on think) I bought my 90 minute CD-Rs at
http://www.yesbuy.net, but I may have bought something else there.
http://www.pricewatch.com can direct you to places in the US that
sell the larger CD-Rs if you search for them there.

Hi jshumate!
Thanks much for the detailed infos on the extended length CDRs! I will keep you posted on my efforts and if my Sony Vaio's burner will handle the 90 min. I will try burning my 99 min CDRs at 90 mins plus 30 secs and see what happens.

@All,

Here's what you get on one CD with KVCDx3: http://www.kvcd.net/redplanet-cq78-faery-c3d.mpg
That's what the complete movie looks like on one CD-R. Please use WinDVD or PowerDVD for playback. The sample doesn't have audio.
Samples and techniques we used are here: http://www.kvcd.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2339&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

Enjoy,

Thanks KWAG!

The clip looks good with some edge effect going on but in the action scenes I did not see blockiness. Seems very clear.

Silly question ... this appears highly advanced and the referenced thread goes on and on but I assume that this is script within DVD2SVCD ... (perhaps maybe even a stupid question).

You are definitely working at post graduate level.

Druidmeister,

You can found out what's your limit of your burner here:

http://www.feurio.com/English/Writerdb/frame_list_actual_ide.html

Of course, not all the CD Burners are there, but most of the mainstream ones are there. In case your burner can overburn, and if you want to buy 90 & 99-min CDR, I recommend www.AllMediaOutlet.com. I used to buy 90 & 99-min CDRs from YesBuy.net, but I think the prices for 90 & 99-min CDR at AllMediaOutlet.com are now cheaper.

About burners, it depends on the firmware of the hardware maker. For instance, I have 2 burners that support overburns, a TDK 16x10x40 and a Lite-On 32x10x40. The TDK can overburn up to 93:59 and the Lite-On can burn up to 99:59. If I put either a 90-min or 99-min CD in the Lite-On, and using Nero, it shows only 80-min CDs, but you can still overburn it fine, while the TDK burner show 92:17 or 817MB in Nero.

The only advantage of the TDK firmware I can see, is that I can burn a data disc up to 817MB using Nero without using any tricks. This is handy, when I create divX movie. To do that with the Lite-On, there is 2 steps involve to burn a large data file (i.e. 800MB for 90-min CD):

1. Create an ISO image
2. Burn the ISO image with "Expert Features" turn-on.

Since my TDK 16x10x40 can't burn up no more than 93:59, all the overburning beyond this, I used the Lite-On.

Cheers,

P.S. Overburning is nice. I constantly overburn my 80-min CD up to 82:00. The 2-min cushion turn out to be very handy, when you compile clips download from the net to a VCD. This way, I don't have to watch out the total time have to be under 80 min.

:)

i used this script to make a kvcd using dvd2svcd program...
with total time 142minutes in 1 cdr 700mb.(Dune)
just copy this script and save as dvd2svcd.ini
and put in your dvd2svcd local prog,
change the adresses to your locations(tmpgenc, besweet, madplay, etc).
the dlls are free here in doom9 (avisynth thread)
ps :change the audio to besweet, cos i use other program,ok?
if you have problems, post here please.
(but you don't get problems with this script)
burn as vcd in nero.

sorry my poor english!:o

* druidmeister,
i edited the script to make it simple (a little),
now you have only avisynth script that was used
to get the 142 minutes in 1 cdr 700mb,ok?

Hi Jorel:
Thanks much for the detailed infos. This will take some time to digest! Especially on which dlls I have and which ones I need. I hate to ask but which dlls would I still need ... I have the latest DVD2SVCD.
Also, on your suggestion to replace the "BeSweet Executable=C:\DVD2SVCD\headac3he-0.23aFull\SweetHead.exe" ... this would be changed to:
"BeSweet Executable=C:\DVD2SVCD\headac3he-0.23aFull\BeSweet.exe"?

It would be great if somewhere in the future DVD2SVCD will allow a choice of scripts right from the manin menu!

Man ... you guys are good!

you need the dlls to this script (the last script):
[AVISYNTH_LanczosResize, Tweak, Fluxsmooth, Blockbuster*, Legalclip]

and use a "search" to find
lanczosresize

fluxsmooth,blockbuster and legalclip (SansGrip filters):
http://www.jungleweb.net/~sansgrip/avisynth/

just like i wrote:
"ps :change the audio to besweet, cos i use other program,ok?"

but if you want to change to "SweetHead",read and download:
http://kvcd.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1560&sid=1de766f5e5b7c7f5c2e5a6fb691fc834

edited to put the link to download tweak (neuron2 filter):

;) i think that's all(maybe).....
have problems?....ask again,ok? :)

druidmeister,hello again,

i edited the dvd2svcd.ini
with only one avisynth script,
to turn simple and short.

Thanks again Jorel:
Now a couple more questions if I may -
1. What are the advantages of Sweethead over Besweet? I know on the SVCDs I am pleased with the results with Besweet, however could use much improvement with Besweet in VCD mode due to phasing sounds in higher frequencies. And I use as high as 224 bitrate with Joint Stereo. I downloaded this program and will redirect DVD2SVCD to this Sweehead.
2. I noticed in the script for the DVD2SVCD.ini file you have [Folders] for KVCD. Do I need to create these or will the program automatically create them?
3. Problems getting LanczosResize ... I noted that I have Avisynth 2.06 which should include it, it does not pull up under DVD2SVCD Frameserver screen. I tried installing Avisynth 2.07 into the Avisynth directory but still do not LanczosResize to register. Please advise.
4. I downloaded tweak.dll but it shows up as tweak13.dll ... I should modify the script?
5. Once I revise the script per your instructions can I still change from the main DVD2SVCD menu ... for example can I switch to CBR or change the aspect ratio?

Thanks again ... I see from the dlls and discussions that this will be a great improvement especially in blockiness issues!

Cheers and thanks again!!!! Your patience and guidance in some of this advanced material is greatly appreciated.

i try to answer(remember?..of my poor english?)

1 - "What are the advantages of Sweethead over Besweet?"

i use sweethead cos is faster and i can normalize the audio to 90%
and in Besweet i don't know how can i do it.
Besweet is fantastic and you can use it ever.
don't need to change, but if you want, read and download:
http://kvcd.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1560&sid=cda7717a8c87561d9858121aaaf50c29

2 - " noticed in the script for the DVD2SVCD.ini file you have [Folders] for KVCD.
Do I need to create these or will the program automatically create them?"

the program don't automatically create them!
create a folder called dlls and put all dlls there,
cos is easy to find them.
example: in my script you read:
!Tweak.dll=C:\DVD2SVCD\Dlls\Tweak.dll
!FluxSmooth.dll=C:\DVD2SVCD\Dlls\FluxSmooth.dll
!Blockbuster.dll=C:\DVD2SVCd\Dlls\Blockbuster.dll
!Legalclip.dll=C:\DVD2SVCD\Dlls\Legalclip.dll
cos all dlls are in
c:\dvd2svcd\Dlls\...xxx... .dll
clear?

3 - "Problems getting LanczosResize ...
I noted that I have Avisynth 2.06 which should include it,
it does not pull up under DVD2SVCD Frameserver screen."

i download the lanczosresize here in forum
and only put the Lanczos3.dll under dlls folder.
i don't install avisynth,i only install the dvd2svcd
that install(automatically) avisynth.dll under
avisynth folder by default.
i don't change anything about it.

4 - "I downloaded tweak.dll but it shows up as tweak13.dll ... I should modify the script?"
you download the tweak13.zip,the "13" is the version,
unzip and you get the tweak.dll and don't need to change nothing.

5 - "Once I revise the script per your instructions can I still change from the main DVD2SVCD menu ... for example can I switch to CBR or change the aspect ratio?"

yes you can still change many things but

i used the script that was post(really)

and get 142minutes in 1 cdr 700mb(80min cd-r)
using dvd2svcd program.very good image and sound!!!
test one little chapter with this script and see the result!

Hi Jorel:
Thanks much for your great patience. As you can see I am still a Newbie at this.

Your suggestions and guidance helped as to finding the additional files required. Also, DVD2SVCD was great a helping me debug where the file locations should be.

Now comes the problem ... I got an error message before TMPG started encoding:
"Econverterror - "Is not a valid integer value"

I can't seem to debug this error code. Perhaps you might be able to offer some suggestions?

Thanks again for your great assistance! :D

Hi Jorel:
1. I guess while we wait could you possibly help me with this problem. I did some more investigating and found that the script had a typo for default matrix which apparently was causing the matrix not to register and was causing DVD2SVCD to put commas in the infra line. I fixed this by manually selecting the KVCD matrix. Now the next problem I run into is that once I get to the encoder command I get an error message "3dfxCmn.dll not found". I get this error message with either TMPGenc and CCE. Not sure what causes this as I do not get this message with a standard DVD2SVCD script.

2. OK ... let's say I am working with a fresh, all original copy of DVD2SVCD. I want to get one VCD (MPEG-1) from a movie. So I go to the Bitrate screen and enter the following for a movie that is under 100 minutes. I still get two MPEGs! What should I be entering and how is this calculated?

Between 0 and 100 Mins use 1 CD Size 800 ? to 919
Bewteen 100 and 100 Mins use 1 CD Size 800 919 to 919
Bewteen 100 and 100 Mins use 1 CD Size 800 919 to 919
Bewteen 100 and 100 Mins use 1 CD Size 800 919 to 919
Bewteen 100 and 100 Mins use 1 CD Size 800 919 to 919
Bewteen 100 and 9999 Mins use 1 CD Size 800 919 to ?
Max 1150 Min 300 NO Min Avg Checked Max Avg 919

Perhaps should the Max Avg have been "0"?

Thanks again for your help in this!
Cheers

no its not the matrix error.

the matrix is correct,if not there enter the following:

and wrote too:

i'm using dvd2svcd too!
with the script that was post and this matrix!

"Perhaps should the Max Avg have been "0"? "

yes,zero,just like the script.
i do this way too.;)

don't know what is wrong,
we need help cos we use the same program(DVD2SVCD)
and i use that script and save like dvd2svcd.ini
and put on the prog folder.
just it.works fantastic.

i do 5 encodes with times under 70 minutes and 142 minutes!:D
("speaking" again: with DVD2SVCD and this script)

Hi Jorel:
Thanks again for your patience through this.

1. KVCD script: I was able to get the script to work by manually going to the matrix screen and selecting KVCD ... that is when I received the error message when thye program reached the TMPG video encode stage: "3dfxCmn.dll not found". Note that I still get the same error message when I switch to CCE instead.

2. Standard DVD2SVCD script using CBR: I tried encoding for one CD a movie that was 99 minutes in length. In the bitrate screen I selected 100 minute, 1 CDR with 800 min CDR. Max: 1150, Min 300, No Min Avg, Max Avg set to "0". Unfortunately TMPGENc then encodes to "0" bitrate with very poor video results.

A mystery, eh?

jorel

maybe it can help:
are you use besweet or sweethead?
turn to bsweet if you're using sweethead!
try it!

Hi Jorel:
Yes, I tried Besweet, this is not where the program was having problems.

I must say that Sweethead is extremely faster than BESweet ... does it do a downsample from 48 to 44.1?

:( I must also take this opportunity to make this statement. I am still at a loss and in extreme shock at yet another Shuttle tragedy. We grieve with the nation at this tragic loss of lives. It is very sad that this tragedy occurred as the astronauts were returning to family and friends. Our prayers go to family and friends of these heroes. Having worked in Aerospace for over 15 years I am well aware of how mistakes in design and manufacture happen. It is when these mistakes occur and lives are lost that there needs to be accountability and corrective/preventive actions taken in the immediate and future design and manufacturing processes. I had initiated a NASA investigation at one subcontractor while I was with a major aerospace concern working on Shuttle Centaur and I am all too aware of some of the incompetence and negligence and apathy of some aerospace contractor inspectors and subcontractor processes that I uncovered and the excellent job the NASA investigators did in uncovering more than just the tip of the iceberg in helping to resolve a serious electronic component issue. But the horror stories in the Aerospace industry still continue as evidenced in this latest tragedy. It both saddens me and angers me at the same time, but hopefully the investigation leads to the root cause.

druidmeister
you can downsample from 48 to 44.1 .
in the "sweethead.template.ini" ,
you see at the bottom of the script:

; SSRC defaults:

UseSSRC = 1

changing the UseSSRC number to zero(0) = 48khz
changing the UseSSRC number to one (1) = 44.1khz
and in dvd2svcd in audio "tab" you can do the same:
if in sweethead (useSSRC=1) 44.1 ,then "tick" 44.1 in dvd2svcd too.
and with the bitrate:just the same value in the progs.
;)

Hi Jorel:
Thanks for the sentiments ... I also believe that the inspectors should have a chance to do their work and that UN backing is needed rather than the US going in like the whole Roman Legion to conquer the world!

On the DVD to one VCD (MPEG-1) issue I tried the following:
Sweet Home Alabama, 109 minutes, I set the audio bitrate to 128/Joint Stereo.
I set the video bitrate to 1 CD, 790 minutes and the max at 1150, min at 300, no min avg, max avg 850. I used CBR. When TMPGENC starting encoding the video I verified 850 bitrate.
I should have had one CD at a cutpoint of 785. What I got was again two files one at 803MB and one at 300MB.
I still don't know what I am doing wrong.
Also I have had a few SVCDs go over the 800 min limit requiring me to reencode as I could not burn to 80 min in Nero. As a precaution I am now using your 790 min CD limit and it appears to work.
This is a freshly installed DVD2SVCD build C.
Hopefully soemone can help.
Have a great weekend.

hi again friend druidmeister, :)

1- turn the audio to dual channel,is better!sounds better.
dual channel encode separated channels,
the right don't interage with the left and vice-versa.

2- turn max average to 0(zero) and let max 1300 and min 300.

3- use "constant quality CQ" in tmpgenc.

4- you wrote too:
"I set the video bitrate to 1 CD, 790 minutes..."
yes,it will works fine.

:)
Have a great weekend too.
