View Full Version : Ripping, and episode DVD's?

I'm going to make my first DivX's out of the Buffy first season DVD's.
Normally, I would rip the VOB's (a whole movie), use DVD2AVI and go from there. How do you do episode discs? With the "standard" method, I would get all 4 episodes in one large DivX file.

Is there a way to split them up after or before the compression?

Also, I was playing with DVD Decrypter and noticed if I use IFO mode instead of file mode, I can rip each PGC (of which there are 4) into a seperate VOB collection. That would give me 4 distinct VOB/episode sets to start with. Is that a better idea?

Thanks,
Robert

This is the way to go. Just treat each vob as you normally would a movie (though your filesize goal will probably be different).

Also, IFO-mode is probably preferable no matter if it is one complete movie. I've never even used File-mode.

Thanks. Should I demux my preferred audio stream using DVD Decrypter too, or leave that for later utilities?

Sorry for the newbie questions.

That's a matter of preference. Either you let DVDDecrypter demux them or you do that with DVD2AVI (or another tool if you wish). If you plan to use 2 CDs for your encode I'd personally use DVD2AVI to demux it, but otherwise it's a bit faster letting DVDDecrypter do it for you.

It appears Doitfast4U works nicely getting all the episodes to my disc with AC3 & M2V files intact. I'll use that for starters! (cool utility). My only question is whether I should use force film, IVTC or what not. They are NTSC episodes.

I could go through trial & error to figure it out, but if anyone knows how these TV episodes deinterlace best, please let me know! I just want to convert them to DiVX and store about 12 episodes on a data DVD-R. I'll only watch them on my PC, so fitting it to a CDR is not important, but getting good quality on the smallest size is.

Thanks for your help.

I think the standard procedure is to force film if possible, then try to IVTC or deinterlace, but I always just refer to the handy guide (http://www.doom9.org/ivtc-tut.htm) that hakko504, jggimi, and manono wrote. If you haven't read it it is probably the clearest thing I have read on the topic, and if you have read it then reviewing it and finding out for yourself is a good way to gain experience IMHO. I hope it helps.
