View Full Version : bad burns with new Verbatim DVD-Rs (blue inner ring)

In the past few months, I've copied a couple hundred DVDs using 2x Verbatim DVD-Rs with my Pioneer DVR-A04 with almost total success (the few bad burns I've had were my fault), but with my most recent shipment of Verbatims, this has changed. These discs have a blue inner ring, rather than the clear inner ring on all my old Verbatims. A while ago, Doom9 had a news posting stating that Verbatim was changing their DVD-Rs to be compatible with the Sony drive, and I think what I now have are those new discs.
So far, I have burned 2 of these new discs. The 1st one failed to burn, giving me an "Internal target failure" error in Nero (I know some of you may think Nero is not the ideal burning prog, but all my Nero burns up to this point have worked). The second disc burned OK, but toward the end of the movie, it freezes up. I am positive neither of these discs was improperly authored. I am wondering if anyone else has gotten Verbatims with blue inner rings instead of clear ones, and if so, what kind of success have people had with these discs? Have I just gotten a few bad Verbatims, or has the change they made screwed up the discs' compatibility with the DVR-A04? I will be burning another disc or two from a different 10-pack to check further.

I don't really see a blue inner ring on my new verbatims.
But I did notice in dvd decryptor it shows that manufacturer ID to be MCC G200 which is totally different from the older verbatims!! according to the vcdhelp database, MCC's are the dvd-rw's, but this one is definitely dvd-r. So it seems verbatim is using a different OEM to make their dvd-r's now.
I'm doing a test burn today on it.

MCC is Mitsuibishi Chemical Corporation whcih is the parent company of Verbatim.
As for fritzdis problem, I'm not sure. I've had one customer complain about verbatium discs being bad over the final 200mb. But you only notice that if you literally fill the DVD-R all the way up (4.35GB).

Ahh, thanks for the info :)

@fritz: I haven't seen any blue rings either, but since these discs are broken, you can send them to Verbatim, and they will replace them. A friend of mine had to do this (he got some bad cd-rws), and he did not even have to pay any shipping for sending the discs to Verbatim.

@gooki:
I become suspicious when i am being told "of course that disk will fail, you are filling it to a full capacity" about those verbatims :-)
They (verbatims 2x) cost 10.03USD at my place, 7cent cheaper than 2x TDK media. With that kind of price i want blanks that will at least be burnable :/
So are now verbatims useless to burn data, too? ;-)

I have burnt several of them at 4480-4489 MBs, and none showed any problem.
However, no manufacturer can avoid any bad discs being shipped. It's just important that these are replaced without any cost.
I can get Verbatims at 2,80 Euro each, so $10 sounds high to me :confused:

Verbatim's are like $3.40 here (USD). where do you live?
That is really sad if Verbatim's are crap...i mean what is there to buy then? I assumed they were "branded" media and should be better than Ritek generic.

My location is entered in my profile :)
Another thing: A local vendor told me that Verbatim hasn't delivered any media for 6 weeks now (that's why I've switched to Maxell) here.
=> maybe *this* is the reason? Are they very well aware of a problem?

i burnt another blue-ringed disc from a different 10-pack with the same result. i also tried that same movie at 1x, and it seems to be OK (i checked the last couple chapters of the movie and the special features toward the end of the disc). i'm in the process of watching the whole movie to make sure.
@gooki:
like alexnoe, I have burnt many discs very close to the disc's full capacity, without problems. also, one of the discs that doesn't work was only 4187 MB (about 300 MB shy of the limit).
@alexnoe:
i already planned to send the discs to verbatim. what concerns me more is whether i will be able to successfully burn verbatims at 2x in the future, as I've found them to be very reliable until this recent problem.

I agree with what has been said.
i.e. every manufacturer tends to put out a bad batch every so often. But the good thing with verbatim is they're very reasonable when it comes to replacing them.
But unfortunetly for those of us who live in small countries, it may take a long time for a specific retailer/distributor to sell out of a particular batch of discs. So we constantly end up buying from the same bad batch.
Lol - you think $10.00USD is expensive for a verbatim DVD-R disc. Take a stroll down to my local electronics store; $20.00USD for a verbatim DVD-R, $25.00USD for a HP DVD+RW.
