View Full Version : How do I convert XViD .AVI files to VCD-capable .MPGs?

With DiVX files I can use TMPGEnc to create 2 .MPGs files, which I then drop into the VCD wizard in Nero.
I tried doing this with XViD and everything went fine, including the output .MPG file. But when I use Nero to create the VCD, the CD does one or two things, depending on which VCD-capable DVD player: 1. It plays but it flashes a black screen, which lasts 1-2 seconds, every 3-5 seconds. Or 2. It plays, but almost the entire screen is green, and it makes a horrible screeching noise.
I'm desperate here on how to convert XViD .AVI files into something I can use with VCDs. (...is it possible to convert XViD to DiVX? [as a last resort])

You could try to just change the fourcc code of your avi file to divx, and see if that makes any difference? Not sure if this will work, but it does sound like this might be a problem with the transcoding of the file, and changing the fourcc would make use of the divx decoder instead of the xvid one...
I'm not sure how this works, so bear with me, this is just theory, but provided the decoder is at fault, using ffdshow instead might help? Not sure if TMPGEnc depends on the dshow filters at all, though...

Hmmm...I'm really new to...well...everything, and about 95% of what you just said makes no sense to me. :scared: Could you be more specific on exactly what I need to do?

Yes it does ... install ffdshow alpha from http://sf.net/projects/ffdshow , configure it to play XviD content and try again ...

I explained what you are asking for here:http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=41117
And it works!

I'm not trying to be rude, but are you both (the last 2 posters) sure these are my problems? I can play XViD content just fine on my computer, and TMPGEnc never crashed while I was trying to convert...

Why not try one of our suggestions, to see if it works, before asking more questions? I'm sorry if my first post went a little 'over your head', but the suggestions made by birdy and ChristianHJW are worth a try. Install ffdshow, as suggested above, and try again.
Good luck! :)

Originally posted by JohnGafnea I can play XViD content just fine on my computer, and TMPGEnc never crashed while I was trying to convert.. There are known issues with latest XviD Dshow filters, at least if you use builds from the dev branch .. very well possible TMPEGencoder doesnt like that ...
Downlaoding and installing ffdshow takes less than 5 minutes, configuring it to play XviD conten via 'Start' 'Program Files' 'ffdshow' and ticking the XviD box less than a minute ... i would give it a try if i were you ...
birdy's comments are very valuable also .. i personally had no idea it is possible to set priority for opening mode for AVI files.
