Are there plans / mechanisms to backup the forum as a kind of read-only-archive or snapshot to make it available in case of disaster (what kind ever)?
We rely quite heavily on this tool - having seen problems with other forums I'm a little frightened.

we currently have two people making regular backups. And if the server were to die we could easily put up the forum database on another server and go on. Plus I do the occasional backup, too. Add the server admin who cares about his server you have 3.5 people from 4 different countries (and 2 different continents) who would be capable to do something should disaster ever strike. Now maybe you're thinking what if something happened to me.. but we have even that case covered. Of course it probably wouldn't be the same but should I die tomorrow I wouldn't leave an unbreakable treasure vault.

that's relaxing news for the first part of my thoughts...

The second aspect in my mind was if there is a way to make "standalone" versions of a forum. Are there any?
(meant only technically and not thinking about copyright issues of course)

I don't follow there.. what do you mean by standalone version? This board runs on a server on a completely different location than the site servers.. there's no connection except for me. Also, I own the board code so if the company decides to stop developing it that's no problem either.

no,no, I was more generally interested if there is a way to convert the whole forum database in a kind of HTML-stuff that can be packed e.g. on a CD and read offline.
( :) what should we do when YOU decides to stop the forum... :) )

as I've said in a similar thread not so long ago.. there are no plans to abandon the site and when I go I'll leave my legacy for someone to continue.

as for your idea... I shudder just thinking of that. Somebody downloading your entire site is every webmaster's nightmare. Imagine clones of this forum starting all over the place... you may think that would never happen but I'm convinced it would and I'm not going to let this happen so there will never be a database dump for everybody to download (unless I have to give up running this site - something highly unlikely - and can't find a worthy successor (I do have people in mind)).

So, please stop worrying, you'll give people the wrong ideas. The site and forum are safe and sound and I'm going to fight like a lion to not let anything happen to them.
