View Full Version : Problem keeping menus and splitting to 2

I am having a problem splitting the movie Fantasia to 2 parts and keeping the menus. The problem is with dvd-r disc 1. I own the original dvd and it plays fine and I'm just trying to back it up in case it goes bad with age.

The problem is that disc 1 will not play in my standalone dvd player. It will play on my pc ok with ifoedit's player, powerdvd, and hollywood plus's "dvd station", but I don't care if it plays on my pc.

I've burnt other dvd's (where I don't keep the menus or extras, just the main movie) and they play ok on my player so the problem seems to be with keeping the menus and splitting to 2.

Nero version 5.5.9.0 refuses to burn disc 1. It aborts with an error message "unexpected exception". I am using Nero's "dvd-video" mode because it finds errors so that I do not burn a dvd-r and waste it.

I can force Nero to burn this disc if I change Nero's mode to "data
dvd". When I do that, the dvd-r plays with ifoedit's player, Powerdvd and with Hollywood Plus's dvd station software, but it WILL NOT PLAY IN MY STANDALONE DVD PLAYER. That is the problem.

I was able to fit the entire original dvd onto dvd-r disc 1 except that on disc 1 I only had part #1 (out of the 2 parts created by the "split to 2") of the main movie. So, disc 1 got all the extras, all the menus, etc.

I am not concerned here with disc 2 because it is fine. I put onto disc 2 only part 2 of the main movie and used ifoedit's "create ifo files" to create new ifo files and this disk burnt ok in Nero and played ok on my standalone dvd player. So, forget about disc 2, it is not an issue. It was setup to just play the main movie without menus or extras (since those are all on disc 1) and it does that.

Here is the exact procedure I used to create disc 1 that won't play in my standalone player.

I ripped all dvd files with dvd decrypter version 3.1.2.0 in its "file f" mode. Dvd decrypter general options were: remove macrovision, detect mastering errors. Its "file mode" options to "merge vob files" and "multi-angle processing" were not checked. I
don't think any of its other options matter so I do not list them here.

All of these files from the original dvd were now on my hard drive in
c:\dvd.rips\fantasia\video_ts folder (note, there was no video_ts.vob file on the original dvd):

VIDEO_TS.BUP
VIDEO_TS.IFO
VTS_01_0.BUP
VTS_01_0.IFO
VTS_01_0.VOB
VTS_01_1.VOB
VTS_02_0.BUP
VTS_02_0.IFO
VTS_02_0.VOB
VTS_02_1.VOB
VTS_03_0.BUP
VTS_03_0.IFO
VTS_03_1.VOB
VTS_04_0.BUP
VTS_04_0.IFO
VTS_04_0.VOB
VTS_04_1.VOB
VTS_05_0.BUP
VTS_05_0.IFO
VTS_05_0.VOB
VTS_05_1.VOB
VTS_05_2.VOB
VTS_05_3.VOB
VTS_05_4.VOB
VTS_05_5.VOB
VTS_05_6.VOB
VTS_05_7.VOB
VTS_06_0.BUP
VTS_06_0.IFO
VTS_06_1.VOB
VTS_06_2.VOB
VTS_07_0.BUP
VTS_07_0.IFO
VTS_07_0.VOB
VTS_07_1.VOB
VTS_08_0.BUP
VTS_08_0.IFO
VTS_08_1.VOB

The main movie is in vts_05. I split vts_05 with ifoedit version 095 (When I hit the ifoedit "about" button it says 095, but at the top of the ifoedit window it says "094"). In ifoedit, I selected the main menu bar item "vob extras" and in its menu I selected "split to 2 dvd-r's". I left all the default options checked except "auto-copy menus files". So, the options that were checked were:

correct vob-unit (navigation pack) pointers in vob files

correct original ifo files

split to 2 dvd-r's

remove p-uops

remove macrovision

adjust vob-unit pointers

adjust audio/subp point

I picked the split point to be chapter 7. I did not strip any streams and I did not strip any vob id's.

The disc folder selected for disc 1 was c:\disc1\VIDEO_TS.

These files were there after the split to 2:

vts_05_0.ifo
vts_05_0.bup
vts_05_1.vob
vts_05_2.vob

When the split was finished, I closed ifoedit.

Next, I copied all the original files from :\dvd.rips\fantasia\video_ts to
c:\disc1\VIDEO_TS except that the only vts_5 file I copied was vts_05_0.vob. I left alone all the vts_05 files that were already in c:\disc1\VIDEO_TS after the split.

I restarted ifoedit, opened c:\disc1\VIDEO_TS\video_ts.ifo and I clicked on ifoedit's "get vts sectors" button and allowed that operation to finish.

I repeat that the problem with this was that it would not play on my standalone player even though it did play on powerdvd, hollywood plus's "dvd station", and ifoedit's player.

I found an old bug report in the forum and I also tried editing vts_05_0.ifo with ifoedit and decrementing by one the ending sector of the last cell in the VTSM_C_ADT table, but that did not help (in fact, it made things worse-maybe that bug has already been fixed?).

Please help!

And thank you, Derrow, very, very much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Try using Imgtool 0.98 for burning or image making. If you have reallocation errors then uncheck reallocation. ImgTool will put your files in order either way. I've had a lot success with burning disk 1 of alot of splitted DVDs and playing on my picky Sony standalone.

Thanks for your help, sorry for my late reply, had pc troubles and
was away from email for a while.

I was able to get Nero to burn the dvd if I used Nero's "data dvd"
mode, but if I used Nero's "dvd-video" mode, it gave various errors,
mostly "unexpected exception" if I remember correctly.

Does Nero or Imgtool do anything with the files before burning them-
some kind of processing or whatever, or does it just check that they
match up to a dvd standard and then just write them as-is to the dvd
if they did meet the dvd standard?

What does "file reallocation" do?

Thanks again,
