I'm not talking about ripping studio discs here
but more on the lines of if i author home video discs, can i copy protect against the casual home user
trying to backup the disc as opposed to users of this forum who have the knowhow to rip and re-burn anyway.

Not with a DVD-R general use drive. With a DVD-R authoring drive you can.

the only copy protection scheme you can count on being available on every DVD player is CSS and Macrovision (the latter for analogue capturing). Other mechanisms would mean that a lot of people couldn't use those discs which excludes them (that's why we still can rip DVDs... they couldn't change the encryption once it was cracked). So, I guess it's a question of price if you can afford to get such discs made (and then as gooki said.. you need a special drive and blanks and only the pressing facilities will add CSS to your content... alternatively you can also send DLT tapes but these aren't cheap either).

Thanks for the advice, I think i'll just put the disc out ...If someone wants to rip it....they will anyway !!!!
Best wishes
