When trying to open a Divx 5.x movie (not sure about the exact version cause I didn't encode it) I get this message from VirtualDub:

Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'DX50' (unkown)

VirtualDub requires a Video For Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress the video. DirectShow Codecs, such as those used by Windows media player, are not suitable.

Obviously installing Divx 5.x Pro does not provide these codecs so where do I get em. For a test I also did a full install of Nimo's codec pack but to no avail. What about DirectX Media? Is this the way to go? I only found a version suitable for Win95 but no newer release. Which VFW-codec do I have to use and where can I find it? TIA.

That is a DirectShow codec

When trying opening the file check the 'Extended Open Options' and force the video format and codec to 'DIVX'.

I agree that the best thing is to install ffdshow rather than divx.

You will avoid any spyware also and playback of all divx's is very
good with ffdshow.

the point is, as jcsston stated, that ffdshow is a directshow decoder and wouldnt help you opening the file in vdub. you need a vfw codec for that. the vfw codec comes of course with the divx5 codec.
are you sure you have the latest version installed ?

interesting thing:
as VD indeed needs vfw codec to open any format really
(and sure you can't oen divx5 with VD+ffdshow or any directshow codec),
i tried aviutil and was surprised when aviutil OPENED divx5 with
divx412 decoder(!)(as in file properties it listed divx412...)
LOL!

but it's no surprise really,as divx5 is further development of divx4...
(it's only that aviutil used the "closest match",and VD refused to do it without exact vfw decompresor)

cheers

Yeah. I deinstalled/reinstalled Divx 5 and then opened the file with Extended Open Options forcing the format to Divx and it worked. No need to installe ffdshow. Thanks.

There is one broken tool out where which creates AVI files using DX50 as dwFourCC. divX 5 has to use "divx". That's why you need to force it to divx...
