I have been trying to rip Ice Age Disc 1 for a couple days now. There is some major funkiness to stripping this disc. I will state my discoveries and ask if anyone has done it successfully!

1.) use DVDDecrypter to copy disc to harddrive
2.) use VOBRator to determine what i want to keep
3.) use IFOEdit 0.95 to edit VIDEO_TS.ifo and remove all FBI warnings, region encoding, and P-UPs. I save this to a different directory.
4.) use IFOEdit 0.95 to remove AspectRatio selection screen. This must be done BEFORE correting VTS sectors! This is then saved to the new directory.

now comes the trickiness. in essence, i wanted to duplicate the entire disc, without the standard version on it. i dont remember the exact DVD structure, but the widescreen movie, i think, was in VTS_03_x and the standard was in VTS_08_x. well, typically you would just remove all VTS_08_x and get VTS sectors and off you go.. but, heres the catch.. the games under special features are 4x3. i discovered that the disc needed VTS_08_0.* for the games to function properly.

well, now we have our new files in new folder, we edit the menu extras and vob extras of VTS_08_0.ifo and save to new location. get vts vectors on VIDEO_TS.ifo to make sure everything lines up..

well, the disc works.. kinda.. it works fine on the pc. but, on the tv (Sony DVP-NS300), when you go to games, you see the highlight sprite in the correct locations, but its like the screen doesnt reformat to 4x3 for the games and it goes whack.. then when you hit menu it stops the dvd.

also, something else i noticed with this movie is that in the opening sequence (they are sliding down the ice tubes) on the tv its full screen, but the aspect ratio is 16x9 meaning, everything is correct, except your missing the right-hand 1/3rd of the screen.. this happens with the commercial disc as well, so i dont think its a problem with any of the programs i have.. but again, it might just be my player and/or tv set. i get the correct aspect and window size when playing via WinDVD on the pc.

something else of interest.. when trying to use Nero to burn, i would get the infamous File Reallocation Error. well, i saw to burn a UDF/ISO compilation.. anyway.. if i tried to leave VTS_08_0 and remove VTS_08_1-4 nero would tell me it couldnt find 1-4.. shouldnt IFOEdit have taken care of that? then when i put empty VTS_08_1-4 i got an error something about logical file size multiple (2kb). something or other.. anyway, i could get around all this weirdness by burning in DiscJuggler, but then i was back to the funky aspect ratio phenomenon.

has anyone else noticed similar things, or has anyone else been able to make an exact functioning copy of the Ice Age Disc 1 DVD minus the 4x3 version and aspect ratio selection screen?

Yes,i noticed the exact problems you are having.I tried every trick i could think of(including dummy 0 byte or 100kb vob's,delete playback in ifo etc, etc, etc)to no avail.I have done plenty of WS/P&S on the same side discs but this is the only one i could not master.I did get it to work on my Apex AD-1500 after making an image with ImgTools(i could not burn the VIDEO_TS folder directly in any program). There is something wrong with the disc because it doesn't work in any stand alone player exept my Apex(& the computer of course)where it works exactly as i intended so i just gave up.I saved all original Ifo/Bup and 0.vob files in a folder so if someone comes up with a solution i can fix this sucker! As far as the menus, they are set to "force to P&S" in the authoring process as are almost every commercial dvd out there. Most menus are designed to only show the middle part on 4:3 tv's-they will be 16:9 on your computer and on widescreen(16:9)tv's.Check out your dvd collection and you'll see what i mean.
