Has anyone tried this media in the new 4x drives? How well does it do? I recently bought the sony dru-500a and am looking for new media and if the ritek 4x performs as promised, that's what I'll get. Anyone with experience?

I've seen them advertised on a couple of different websites, but the one I'll go with is hypermedia.com

Hi

I tried Datawrite 4X which are Ritek G04 disks with my DRU-500A and they only write at 2X. Recordnow Max says it is going to write at 4X but after the Sony has checked the disk it drops back to 2X and takes 30 mins to write.

Out of 30 Datawrite 4X disks I have only had 4 disks that actually wrote at 4X (i.e. 15 mins for a whole disk). Is this everybody's experience or do I just have a bad batch of disks?

same thing happened to me with the riteks they took 40 min to write a whole disc what a pain in the ass

It should only take 30 mins for a full disk at 2X. It sounds like your drive is having to use burnproof because it's not being fed it's data quick enough.

Try enabling DMA and this should speed things up.

Yep, the ritek g04's may bring up 4x capable burning, but it will only burn at 2x. I'm going to try returning the 50 I bought. Does anyone know how good Hyper Microsystems are with returns?

i have dma enabled, maybe ill take the chance and take burnproof off see if it makes a diff even though it might make a coaster. I hope thats not the prob cause my machine is pretty fast i dont want to have to buy new shit to make it quicker

HYPER microsystems is telling me I need to downgrade my firmware to use the riteks g04 at 4x. How do I do this? I have 1.0f

I already tried that and it didn't work. I went back to 1.0d and they still wrote at 2X.

I have firmware 1.0d if you want to try it.

I had the same problem writing to Datawrite/Ritek 4x dvd's, they would only burn at 2x, I was using firmware 1.0f, under Win XP Home Edition, I clean formatted my pc with Home edition and installed just Stomp Record Now Max 4.5, was still the same. I formatted my PC again and installed Windows XP Professional with SP1 and similarly installed just Stomp Record Now Max 4.5, and it now writes to Datawrite/Ritek 4x media at 4x!! I have emailed Sony support and they say they will investigate the matter to see if there are any issues with XP Home Edition.

I'm not saying my experiences will solve every other users problems with Ritek 4x media, but it will be interesting to see other users feedback on this matter.

Hi

Thanks for your reply but I am already running Win XP Pro with SP1. I have tried bios revisions 1.0d, 1.0f and the new 1.0g

I am now convinced it is a media quality problem. Some of the disks have a really deep purple colour (like Ritek G03) and these will write at 4X whereas the rest have a wishy washy purple colour and these drop back to 2X after the drive has tested the disks.

Can anyone else confirm these findings and if so where do we get the deep purple variety? The box I purchased was mixed with the majority being the wishy washy type.

I got my self infiniti 4x media that is ritek g04 and have burned 4 dvds so far with nero and have burned them all successfully in 4x even when I was encoding a movie in the backround and surfing the net.
they all took under 16 minutes to burn.
and I have the dru-500a with firmware 1.0g I updated my drive to the g firmware before I got the media so I dont know if it has to do with the g firmware or not but it works soo good with writing and everything is very very good readble.
so I am very happy.

I have had 0 problems with the Ritek g04 from hypermedia. They writer perfectly at 4x in my 105.

Hi

The Pioneer 105 does not test the media quality while writing like the Sony DRU-500A does. If you use 4X rated media with the Pioneer it will write at 4X regardless of how good the media is which may result in a coaster. The Sony will start writing at 4X and if the media is not good enough for 4X will drop to 2X which means no coaster but annoying if you've paid the extra price for 4X media.

I have a Pioneer A05 and I've burned a spindle of 25 Ritek 4X discs and for the most part they work very well. They also burn at 4X without trouble...if you're looking for a place to buy them,Hyper Microsystems (http://www.hypermicro.com/store/index.htm) is pretty cheap and they shipped mine out fast when I ordered
