The date of manufacture should be on the back/underside of the xbox. And even though they were purchased at the same time, it is still very possible they got different batches.
I know this might be a stupid question, but does your son's friends xbox have the DVD addon remote? As they won't play without it (unless you have it chipped/flashed).

OK, here is the low down on xbox's and DVD playback.
Issue 1.
MS has used 3 different drives in various xbox's, Thompson (they suck), Phillips (better but still problamatic), and Samsung (considerably better). The Samsung drives are found primarily in the 1.1 xbox units which are shipped with the game combo pack for $199. The 1.0 units are primarily Thompson drives and have significant compatability issues with a large amount of media. The newer 1.1 units seem to be Phillips drives.
Issue 2.
The software used to burn DVD's. I have never been able to produce a DVD-RW with Nero that will run on my 1.1 Samsung unit. I can take the exact same disc and it will play fine on my standalone. I can then take the exact same disc, erase it, burn the same image with Record Now and it will play fine in my xbox. Whenever possible, I use Record Now, however, it is very unforgiving when it comes to format violations while Nero is just the opposite.
Good luck, hope this helps!

all the discs i burn are ripped with dvd decryptor
run through ifo edit and then i create a .IMG with imgtool and burn
with decryptor i have no problem on any standalone i have tried so far exept this xbox! so i cant see the media or the way the movie
was burnt being the problem
