First of all....happy New Year to everyone here at Doom9

When i ripped Band of Brothers with just the Dutch subtitles and played it on my DVD player, i got only English subtitles, even though the subtitle selection OSD display said that i had chosen the Dutch one's.
The last week i have been searching this forum for an answer to this problem but i didn't find any. I saw that a number of people had the same problem and just like me, thought that it was a bug in IfoEdit or other software they were using. For as far as i can tell, no solution was found.

I have been trying to find out what was causing this problem and it seems to be connected to the setup of the DVD player and the TV.

Here's what solved the problem for me:

The default setup for my DVD player is: 4:3 Pan & Scan

The default for my TV (Non Widescreen but capable of displaying in Widescreen mode) is "Auto"

When i play the ripped DVD with these defaults, i have the subtitle problem.

When i change Both the DVD & TV settings to 16:9 the problem dissapears and the Dutch subtitles are displayed

What still puzzles me is why this doesn't happen with the original DVD's and maybe Derrow can find a setting that solves it in the IFO files but for now i'm happy that i can play my DVD's :)

Hi there,
There is a solution, if you look at the subtitle number, you will see that the number is something like 1x20 (or somthing like that)
This should be just 1 number (without the 'x')
You can try to find a corresponding number for that subtitle.
I have a list of correct numbers if you want it, i can post it here. (don't have it right now)
I posted before about this problem, maybe a search will give you your solution

Regards

do your subtitles have more than one id?? something like (1x20,1x21)
use DVD2DVDR that will extract the subs correctly. it uses cce and ifoedit. i have used that program and it works. it only has i little problem... when using that method you lose your menus... unless you do what is described on "DVD9 to DVD5 full copy" guide on doom9's site, but you'll need Maestro for that!!!
to know where you can get it (DVD2DVDR, of course) use the search button and seach for it...

The problem is not that the subtitles aren't extracted corectly, they are. The only problem is that they aren't displayed whith the default setup of the DVD player and the TV. I have to force both of them to use the 16:9 aspect ratio instead of 4:3 pan-scan & Auto.

In other words.... the rips are fine but the hardware needs to be told to use the right display ratio.

ok i think i know... if the subs have two streams like i said before... one is the widescreen version and the other is the letterbox version... open subrip and check for yourself.
you can rip as a sup file which you can use in ifoedit...
hope this helps now!!! :p
