Toshiba makes 1x/1x DVD-R/W for Laptops.
Although DVD+alliance claims that dvd+r/w is better, faster and easier, they are far away from releasing slim drives :D

Sony makes the DRX500UL. It's an external drive that claims to burn all dvd formats (both -&+ R/W), except RAM, and quite quickly too (4x for -R, but I don't know where you'll find 4x media yet!). I actually just acquired one for my laptop, since it is so portable. I've just started putting it to use, so I really couldn't strongly recommend it one way or the other. I've only noticed that it takes forever to burn with the provided Record Now software, and I actually acquired a "blue screen of death" using it with XP. I need to check into my settings...read up on the forum...so if anyone has any suggestions on setting-up this particular drive feel free.

Ricoh has scheduled to release a 2.4x/2.4x Mt. Rainer compatible DVD+R/RW notebook drive this quarter so yes, it will probably be "better, faster and easier" ;)

"scheduled" and "released" are 2 different things :) I've intentionally added "easier" to see if someone quotes that piece of disinformation, and indeed, someone did :sly:
insert disc -> burn -> eject disc is the same for both of course :D

Verbatim 4x DVD±R media is as to my information in beta state, but already of higher quality than any "generic" media for 1x speed. So it can't take that long until it is released.

Pioneer 4x DVD-R media is availabe at 5 euro here.

Yes I know that but it was a reply to your "far away from releasing" which sounds like several years to me.

Well to make it a good quote I couldn't take the "better, faster" part only ;)

Actually, when refering to anything connected with computers, "a few months" is something like "somewhen in the distant future" imho...
