Anyone know the quality of Taiyo Yuden 2x DVD-R discs when compared to the likes of Maxell, Verbatium, Pioneer etc? As I require some really high quality DVD-R discs for commercial applications.

It is very hard to get Taiyo Yuden DVD-R at all, but their CD-R are superior to Verbatim or TDK. They are certainly worth a try.

Pretty good. Buy I only bought one disc for test. The price
in Taiwan is 130 NT dollars (about 4 US dollars) which is
cheaper than TDK, Verbatim, or Pioneer discs sold here.

Thanks for the input. I have 50 of them on the way so I'll let you all know how they preform.

gooki,

I bought a ten-pack of Memorex DVD-R's from Best Buys (about US$ thirty something) and DVD Decrypter says these are Taiyoyudens. Memorex wrapper claims version 2.0 and they haven't failed me so far, at 2X on a Pioneer A04 (firmware 1.30). I use them if I absolutely want a "keeper" DVD. Great media but a bit pricey. Wish there was something to bridge the gap between Ritek's and this expensive media.

Cheers,

Thanks Andy ;)

Do you know if they have good compatibility?

Fenix.

I don't know, never used them. Compatibility isn't restricted to media itself, but if it is, I would trust them more than any other off brand.... .

the VCD guys are setting up a database of DVD-R media and they show the Fuji dvd's to be Taiyo Yudens. so I assumed all Taiyo Yudens were Fuji. Now that someone mentioned he had a memorex that said it was a taiyo it sounds like they are an OEM and different companies sell their discs under their own brands.
I wonder how they compare to Ritek...

Well all I can say is they wrote and read back fine. I've sent one disc to a customer who has a few picky DVD players (nakamichi, portable panasonic etc) for futher testing.

Are there any hardcore tests I can to compare media quality as I have over 5 different brnads floating round my office.

Hmm that's what I thought.

I might leave it out in direct sunlight for a week and see how it reads after that :)

atreides93

I dont think any disk will survive being left out in sunlight for a week :)

alexnoe

Mitsubishi and Taiyo Yuden CD-Rs do, at least in the sun we can here in Germany.

atreides93
8th January 2003, 11:20
Ah I suppose its real different from the sun we get here in california :) things melt in the sun here

alexnoe

Could you try it? All I could do at the moment is testing how long the discs can sustain -15°C...

atreides93

They're selling Taiyo Yuden's here for $2.40 each. So you really think they're better quality than Ritek's?

If I get some I'll test it..
not sure if I want to leave it in the sun though.

gooki

Same here, I'm not sure if I want to waste one of my precious DVD-R discs by leaving it out in the sun.

If I sell a lot over the next few weeks I'll probably try it.

I'd definetly say the Taiyo Yudens are of better quality than the Riteks. But only significant for those who require very high quality media.

I also gave a Fuji DVD-R a try (Taiyo Yuden); recorded with Pioneer A03 at 1x (firmware restriction) and read back with Toshiba SD-M1602 and Nero's DVD speed. Absolutely no problem. With this method I could always spot bad media 'til now. And, the Fuji's are sold at €2,49 at my local Saturn store...

Could you try them at 2x?

sundance
13th January 2003, 08:18
I'd love to but Pioneer doesn't support firmware for my A03 that allows those media being recorded at 2x and I don't want to use some "2x4all" firmware hacks...

That sucks. Ever since I upgraded my A03 to 2.00, I can now burn Ritek G04's at 2X. so I assumed the taiyo yuden's would also be capable of 2X burning on my A03

alexnoe

Ritek G04 are "Highspeed DVD-R", all of which are now written at 2x speed.

Taiyo Yudens are, however, 1x media (as well as any non-Highspeed-media), and one needs to see first if 2x writing without having the necessary write strategy in the firmware is reliable (for "2x discs", the drive have different write strategies for each disc).

If they are of as high quality as Taiyo Yuden CD-R, then OPC alone should suffice for power calibration, but one never knows...

The Taiyo Yuden's I've seen for sale online are advertised as being 2X media. So are these vendors BSing us or what?

sundance
14th January 2003, 12:00
They probably are 2x media, but not certified for all recorders.
Pioneer has a document where you can find out for your recorder:

Taiyo Yuden 1x discs (always remember that, technically, there are only 1x discs and 4x discs!) are certified 2x for DVR-A04/A05.

Sundance, thanks for the link! That is a great page to read about this stuff. I'm so glad I read it :)
i had no clue what was up with this new 4x media etc...

A friend of mine tested those Fuji/TY discs with his A05 at 2x and checked it: No probs.

anybody knows where you can buy online Taiyo Yuden disks for shipping within europe?

sundance
18th January 2003, 12:41
murdof,
that might be risky since you never know what you get when you buy a Fuji DVD. And TY doesn't produce their own, afaik.

And TY doesn't produce their own, afaik :scared:

They make their own media...really. But it's true that a Fuji package can also contain different discs.
