does anybody know of a guide on adding permanent subtitles on a dvdr.
i know how to put them on in maestro but it would be nice to have them on permanently.

why would you want that???
i used to do that in my divx and now i wished i hadn't been so lazy not to have learnt that a year before.

maybe i should of wrote that the subs i want to keep permanent are the ones that you need for any translation of alien/foreign speaking parts of the film.

oh...... closed caption????
i think you can define any kind of sub to be closed caption.
i think i've seen that somewhere.
i'll look it up ...
another way would be muxing them but that i don't know how to do! :(

no need for close caption.
in your script of subrip use the following commands.
Display_Start forced
0011 00:01:52:13 00:01:55:09 mnG_00011.bmp
0012 00:01:55:11 00:01:58:05 mnG_00012.bmp
0013 00:01:59:20 00:02:01:09 mnG_00013.bmp
0014 00:02:01:22 00:02:04:14 mnG_00014.bmp
Display_Start non_forced

yeah... that is by far a better solution, that way you don't really have to mux the video with the subs.

I'm not sure if you meant you knew how to force them in maestro, or just insert the subtitles.
In maestro(v2.915a), double click the subtitle and there is an option right there to make it "Forced Display."
Hope this helps if you didn't already know! :)

I'm glad to know it works, as I've never used it myself!
I'm not sure of a way to do several at once, but if you output all the subtitles to a script file and use Oddyseus's stuff to change it, you could reimport them and that would change large groups. However, I don't know if those tags work with Maestro. Worth a try though!

found something else!
in maestro when you right click project and go to properties, there is an option called (set subtitle to).
tick that then put number 1.
when you play the dvd it automatically starts the subs but you can still turn them off.

Hi
I ripped The Mummy dvd and then used subrip to identify the stream that had the subtitles I needed - I just want the subtitles where they speak Ancient Egyptian and have the place names and dates etc. These are forced subtitles.
Then I ripped that particukar stream from all the vobs and saved 'subpictures as BMP'. This was then saved as mummy.son ready for Maestro.
I opened Maestro and first added the chapters (got from chapterxtractor). Then I added the re-encoded m2v that I created from the original m2v using Tmpgenc. Then I added the AC3 file and then I added the .son file.
I right clicked on the first ten subtitles and checked the 'Force Display'.
I then compiled. Maestro created a VIDEO_TS and an AUDIO_TS folder and put the vob files etc it created into it.
I tried playing the first vob in PowerDVD XP which opened fine and had audio and video in sync. The subtitles should have appeared within the first 2 or 3 minutes or so but there was nothing. I have also tried using Ifoedit to author but again with no subtitles.
Is there anything you can see from what Im doing that is obviously wrong or what I should check with the programs I am using. This is a PAL movie and I have slected the obvious settings as such. Its getting very frustrating as I've been reading and following guide after guide and am not getting anywhere.
I do not have menus as I just want the movie and audio (plus subtitles as necessary).
HEEEEELLLLLPPPPP!!!!

Steve

Try opening the video_ts.ifo file instead of the VOB. I don't think powerdvd will know what to do if you open just the vob file. The IFO file has all the information for navigation and stuff on the DVD. Your methods of authoring might be correct, but if the files are opened wrong in powerdvd, it will appear as if it's not working.
To do this, click on the folder icon on powerdvd XP, then click on "Open DVD files from hard drive". The file you should open is in the video_ts folder and is call video_ts.ifo. This will play the dvd as if you placed it in your settop player, and it should work correctly. Try that, and if that doesn't work, let us know! :)
Hope this helps!

@ghobbit.
the way i do it is the same only i cant put the chapters in first without the video in place.
.m2v then .ac3 then .chp and finally .son
then because their is only a few of the subs i do them seperately.
right click, tick forced display and check the colours aswell press ok.
this is virtualy the same way as you.
if it still doesnt work dont edit any of the subs but right click project then go to properties.
tick (set subtitle to) then select number 1 if you are only having them subs.
let me know how you go on.

@thingimijig and mikecito
Thanks for your replies. I'm at work whilst reading this so I'll try it out when I get home tonight and let you know.
@thingimijig
.....if it still doesnt work dont edit any of the subs but right click project then go to properties. tick (set subtitle to) then select number 1 if you are only having them subs.....
By this do you mean dont check the force display option?
Currently I have checked the Force display option on the first ten or so subtitles with the 'set subtitle to' selected to '1'.
I'll try it with force display unchecked and with the set subtitle to '1'
Just whilst I think of it here at work and after I had made the previous post I had a look at the .son script file created by subrip and at the top it said something about 'non-forced' so I changed that to 'forced' to see if that would make any difference but it didn't.
When maestro is compiling I can see it says its making subtitles. But nothing appears in final product.
Could it be something to do with PGC? Ifoedit says that the original ifo is one PGC yet when I see the compiling window I see something that refers to multi PGC (seven I think it said). The authored PGC is still one.
One other thing I've noticed. In subrip the stream I rip out and create bitmaps from is 0X30. In the authored ifo it says 0x20. Could that affect it? Does anyone know how to change it?
Anyway I'll try out what youve both suggested tonight.
Thanks for your advice

Just a quick question - as I should technically be working :-)
What program do you use after you have created your authored dvd to check everything is working before burning it to disc.
As I said above I use PowerDVD but its been mentioned in another thread that PowerDVD may not be able to view subtitles from a HD and that if I wish to do that then I should use WinDVD or Ifoedit instead. I think I've tried Ifoedit before but I couldnt get the film to work at all with it so I didnt pursue it.
But if its a case simply that its the dvd player software then I'll install WinDVD.
I know I've seen the subtitles using PowerDVD but I cant remember if its was from the ripped files or if it was straight from the disc.- i think it was the latter.

Hi
Tried opening VIDEO_TS.ifo and it didnt work. Subtitles was greyed out and couldnt select it.
I have the PowerDVD XP version. I'm starting again from scratch.
Have so far ripped the disc using DVD Decrypter (file mode).
Following another threads advice I have used IFOedit to strip out unwanted stuff - extra audios and unwanted subtitles. I then created new vobs.
I then used PowerDVD XP to open the new VIDEO_TS.ifo and at first there were no subtitles until I checked and saw that subtitles had been turned off in PowerDVD. I turned them on and the subtitles appeared as they should.
Thats as far as I've got but so far so good. Will continue later today and will let you how I get on.
Thanks for your advice

still no go - sorry for the next bit but its a bit long winded. Please bear with me whilst I try to explain. Something may jump out thats plainly obvious to you but I cant see where I'm going wrong.
I cant believe its this difficult - there must be something that I'm doing wrong because others seem to manage it.
This is step by step what I've done
1. Ripped dvd to hd using dvddec. in file mode
2. Used IFOedit to strip unwanted streams. There were several that said english - usual 0x20 plus others. Several audio tracks etc. I stripped them all except for the movie,6ch audio and the subtitles I wanted which was the 0x30 stream.
3. This created new vobs, ifos etc.
5. Used subrip to rip to bitmap all the subtitltes - approx 40 or so. Created mummy.son and placed in same directory as the bmp's.
6. Created m2v and ac3 from these new vobs.
7. Re-encoded m2v with tmpgenc.
8. Extracted chapters with chapterextractor.
9. Started up DVDMaestro. Loaded m2v and ac3 into the maestro.
10. Then added chapters and then subtitles. Open up subtitles and changed the palette to the created by subrip (*.spf) Also selected 'Force Display' option.
11. Delted menus as I dont want them. Put thing down the bottom to 16:9 Letterbox.
12. Compiled. Resulted in vobs, ifos, bups in VIDEO_TS folder. When finished compiling Maestro opened a window to say it had completed but there was also a warning message which said 'No first play assigned'
13. Tried to open Video_ts.ifo. Powerdvd opened but wouldnt play film. No error messages just wouldnt play. Opened vob directly which did play but no subtitles - which going by what was said above in the thread is what I'd expect.
This next bit is interesting
Had a look at the ifo that subrip gave and it shos this info
video - blah blah
audio - blah blah
subpicture 1:English (2-bit rle) (ID: 0x30)
and it gives this under VTS_PGCITI / VTS_PGC_1
[0000001a] Audio stream 8 status 0 [0000]
[0000001c] Sub-picture stream 1 status -2146430976 [80101000]
sub-picture stream 1 uses stream nr.(4.3): 0
sub-picture stream 1 uses stream nr.(wide): 16
sub-picture stream 1 uses stream nr.(letterbox): 16
sub-picture stream 1 uses stream nr.(pan&scan): 0
This is the only sub picture stream.
This plays fine in Powerdvd XP ( although subtitles do not appear when played in ifoedit)
The interesting bit is that in the ifo created by Maestro I have this
video - blah blah
audio - blah blah
subpicture 1:English (2-bit rle) (ID: 0x20)
and it gives this under VTS_PGCITI / VTS_PGC_1
[0000001a] Audio stream 8 status 0 [0000]
[0000001c] Sub-picture stream 1 status -2147483648 [80101000]
sub-picture stream 1 uses stream nr.(4.3): 0
sub-picture stream 1 uses stream nr.(wide): 0
sub-picture stream 1 uses stream nr.(letterbox): 0
sub-picture stream 1 uses stream nr.(pan&scan): 0
So its changed from 0x30 to 0x20. The status line has changed and I now have 0 whereas before I had 16.
Can I manually change this? Should I bother?
Is there anything anywhere that is obvious because this has got me beat. I determined to crack it but but Ive been at this now for over a week. Im sure its something simple.
Sorry for the lengthy post but Im just trying to give as much detail as possible to try and track down what the problem is.
ADDENDUM
Sorry about this but Ive just tried something and now everythings working - but I dont why
I said I couldnt open the VIDEO_TS.ifo that was created by MAESTRO but I could open the one VIDEO_TS.ifo created by Ifoedit. So on the off chance I copied the file created by ifoedit and replaced the one created by maestro. Run it in PowerDVD and everything works???
Dont get me wrong - I over the moon it works but unless I know why I no further.
Again profuse apologies for the length of this.
Regards
Steve

One thing to change is the "first play error"
To use Maestro to only have the movie(no menu, single track of sound), make a new project.
1)Delete the only menu listed on the left.
2)Double click "Movie1"
3)Drag the m2v file and ac3 file into the assets bin on the bottom right
4)After the files are read and verified, drag the m2v file into the movie track in the movie1 window, and the ac3 into the first audio track, add the subtitles like you did
NOW THE STEP YOU MISSED:
5)Right Click on Untitled1 Project
6)Click View Connections (If it's already checked, find the connections window)
7)Drag Movie1 from the bottom half of the connections window into the top half of the window placing it in the bar that says "First Play" on the left
8)Click on Tools, Compile...Choose a place for it to put your finished DVD
9)Test the DVD in PowerDVD, or burn to disc if you have discs to waste... I suggest Nero 5.5.8.2
Try this... like I said earlier, open it from powerdvd, don't just double click the vob or ifo. Use powerdvd's "Open DVD files from the hard drive" and select the video_ts.ifo. See if that works for you. I don't know if it will fix your problem, but it will let you open it in PowerDVD to at least test the problem.
