The www.robshot.com web site has been down for some time now. Is there anywhere else hosting this or can someone email me it.

Many thanks

It's not the exact document, but Doom9's advanced CCE guide is based on the robshot method.

Nobody I know of hosts the original article, however this guide is based on it http://www.doom9.org/mpg/cce-advanced.htm. Robshot and his co-workers even proof-read the guide so you're not missing out on anything.

Oh, btw, did you do a search on robshot method? First hit I got after this search would've told you the above.

Thanks for the prompt replies. I have read the advanced guide here, I just wondered what else was in the Robshot method as the guide along with many threads on the forum refer to it. Unless someone has saved a local copy it looks like it's gone now. Could Doom9 host the original guide? if the author or someone has it anywhere.

Am I so hard to understand? The method is EXACTLY the same. Robshot and his co-workers (who prefer to remain unnamed but who did major contributions to figure this thing out and who then also made sure that I wrote things exactly how they intended it to be written) checked it out multiple times so I'm sure that I catched every little nuance of the original document. what good would it do to have the same document twice? 99% of the people here refering to the Robshot method never read the original document.. but my version of it. What is it that makes people believe that I decieve them and like to keep the best pieces for myself?

Thanks for the link. Curiosity satisfied now.

On both guides they state to set "Linear quantizer scale". The CCE manual says this is a method for MPEG-1 and recommends using non-linear unless there is a special reason. I have not been ticking this box up till now because what manual says. Can anyone explain what this does? and why the guides say you get better quality when we are talking about Mpeg-2?

The short answer to your question is that the reason RobShot et al decided that Linear Quantization gave the best results was because it what they found when they did their own tests. This does not mean that variable quantization has no place in MPEG2 encoding - far from it. It simply means that RobShot et al subjectively preferred the results they got using Linear Quant'. Variable Quantization is only a part of the MPEG2 spec, since it was one of the improvements over MPEG1 when the newer standard was devised.
