Hi there,
This is my first post here, and first time I've ever had a problem with Gordianknot. I've been using this application for many months now, but only recently, after needing to format and reinstall my PC, have I had problems. I can't for the life of me DivX. It's driving me insane!!!...

I have tried to install Gordianknot 0.26 and 0.27 on 2 different operating systems (Windows XP & 2000). I've tried to rip the VOBs with Smartripper and DVD Decryptor. I've followed the guides on here and other places to the letter (I think). And followed suggestions in these forums, but still suffer the same problems. After numerous formats, etc.. just trying to get it to work, I finally give in to better judgement.

The symptons are. Everything seems to install ok. I just tried the new Gordianknot 0.27, and followed ALL the on-screen prompts. When VirtualDub gets to about 3-9% on the first pass it crashes.

Here is more detail. If anyone can help me, it would be much appreciated :) Thanks...

So we are talking about random crashes. Make sure you got all the latest drivers for your motherboard and graphics card. And make sure that all machine properly cooled.

I've tried it with default drivers and installed all the latest drivers. The CPU temp, etc.. seems fine and NO other applications have crashed. I can leave the PC on for days and nothing crashes.

I'm also not running other applications that may interfere (ie. virus guard)

Hi and welcome to the forum-

Sorry that your first post had to be about a frustrating problem. You said that it crashes at between 3 and 9% in the first pass. Is that with the same movie (or in the case of Fawlty Towers, the same episode)? You also said that you reinstalled the PC. I'm not sure what that means. Did you upgrade? Because my first guess would be that it's a hardware problem-overheating or some sort of instability. As you know, there's not much that stresses a PC quite like video encoding.

So, can you monitor the CPU temps while encoding? Have you run a stress test on the CPU, such as Prime95? Have you run a stress test on the memory, such as Mem86?

I don't think this is the problem, but have you confirmed that DivX5 is installed? Just open VDub and go Video-Compression and see if it's in there with the other codecs. At the same time make sure that DivX4 is not installed. You might try and reinstall DivX5. And as a last resort, you might reinstall GKnot by going to the Options Tab and Delete Registry Entries and then deleting the GKnot folder and then reinstalling. But to my uneducated eye, the codecs and installation don't seem to be at fault.

Edit: khp beat me to it with his good suggestions (I was called away while responding). And it seems that some of the things I suggested you have already thought of. You might run the stress tests I mentioned, though.

Thanks for the advice (both of you)
this programme has indeed found fault where others failed. It failed the CPU stress test.

I'll have to investigate this further, after I shut down for quite a few hours :)

I'll let you know my progress. Thanks again for the advice...

(UPDATE) After letting it cool for 2 hours. Vacumn and toothbrushing the dust away, wacking a huge housesized fan next to an open case (and cooler weather conditions than the past hot week).. It FINALLY made me a nice DivX :)

Thanks for all your advice and help :)
