Hi,
this is maybe absolutly off-topic here, but I don't know which would be the correct forum for this.
I have the following problem:
I have encoded a lot of movies with GKnot yet, without any problem.
Playback looked good till now.
Till today the color during playback look very bad.
For playback I use MS Media Player 7.0 and MS Media Player 6.4. With both I have the same problem.
My Desktop Color Depth is set to 16Bit.
The Movies I have encoded are 24Bit (which is default for GKnot, I think).
If I switch my Desktop Color to 32Bit, playback look well, but I'm sure I never had my Desktop set to 32Bit. It always run in 16Bit and the playback looked well too.
If I do a playback with Nandub and 16Bit Color, the playback is OK.
The only 2 things I changed on my system is, I installed the new Nvidia Driver 41.09 (before I had 30.82), and I installed GKnot 0.27 RipPack and SystemPack (before I used 0.26.1).
I use DivX 5.02 Pro for encoding with be-directional encoding enabled. All other Pro-Features are disabled.
I have Windows Me installed with DirectX 8.1b.
If anybody has any advice for me, please tell...
Thanks,
Barny

Maybe I'm an idiot, but why not just leave the system in 32-bit?

Maybe I'm totally wrong, but doesn't 32Bit use more CPU and GPU power than 16Bit?
I have a Athlon XP+ 1800 with 512 MB RAM and a Gforce 3 Ti 200 with 64 MB RAM.
Maybe 32Bit is OK for this System, but I always try to have a system with high performance, and 16Bit Color Depth allway seemed to be enough for me.
And the other point is, why has it worked till yesterday, and why not today?

Hi-
You could experiment and reinstall the old 30.82 drivers and see if you really had good playback using 16 bit color. My guess is that you were using 32 bit color before, perhaps without realizing it. But if not, perhaps there's something different about the newer drivers. But as you said, your system is plenty powerful to handle the 32 bit color (which does require more CPU power).

I'm sure I never had set my Desktop to 32Bit, because some of the Icons look different in 16 and 32 Bit.
The other point is, that the playback in Nandub look correct, even if I set the Desktop to 16 Bit.
Reinstalling the 30.82 Nvidia Driver did not help.
IMHO, I have a overlay problem here. Maybe only Media Player is affected, but I'm curiouse about the reason for this, and if anybody else has similar problems.

I'm not sure if this explains anything in Nandub, but I was setting the options (Options -> Preferences) in VirtualDub and noticed that for "Quick Preview Mode" which I assume is basic navigational stuff, the default is 16-bit color, so it looks like Nandub might be reducing your color too. I hope that helps to explain something.

Yes, you are right. I just checked the settings in Nandub, and the Output Color is set to 16Bit.
But why does 16Bit in Nandub look correct and in Media Player not?

that's the only thing that could have caused this. what's the resolution of the video you want to play? is it mod 32?

No, it's mod 16.
I have the problem with 4:3 and 16:9 movies.
The 4:3 have a resolution of 560 x 416
The 16:9 have a resolution of 640 x 256 or 640 x 272

well, i don't know what to suggest if reinstalling 30.82 didn't help. i'm using 30.82 myself and don't have any problems.
guess i won't try the new driver...
also try a different player. i once had big overlay trouble with bsplayer. i'm using zoomplayer for quite a while now and i'm really happy with it.

I will try this.
Which version of Zoomplayer do you currently use?

The same problem with Zoom Player 2.90.
Can it be a problem, if the resolution is not mod 32?
And why?

Hi-
guess i won't try the new driver
I don't know why not. I'm using them with no trouble on a GeForce4 4200 (but I'm using 32 bit color). They gave me another 1200 points in 3DMark2001 SE also.

whats it look like? you said the color looks bad but what do you mean by bad?
have you messed with your monitor settings or did the updated driver change the contrast or overlay brightness?
contrast set too high will cause all kinda of artifacts in the video play back.
