My PC configuration is:
Amd Athlon XP 1800+
128 DDR
n current OS is Win Millenium
When I try to encode with Xmpeg (DivX 4) everything works fine but as soon as the process reaches 45 % it stops n iam forced to shutdown my PC...
Yeah the movie iam trying to encode is Matrix,\
Can anyone tell me what OS is best for encoding ??
Which is a good program for encoding??
One more thing have had heard that the codecs too may cause some problems!!
What codecs are optimum for encoding process??
Regards

I use WME on my encoding PC, works fine for it. I've encoded with DivX 3.11, DivX 4, DivX 5, Xvid, MPEG-1, and MPEG-2. An Athlon T-Bird at 950MHz, 256MB DIMM.
I've never used Xmpeg, and, while DivX 4 is out-of-date, I never had your symptom with DivX 4 and Gordian Knot / Virtual Dub.
I recommend you try DivX 5, following Doom9's guide with Gordian Knot. Gknot 0.27 was just released, you can find it in Doom9's downloads section. Install both the base setup and the "system pack."
I recommend installing DivX 5 "Pro" for encoding, as it includes Bi-Directional encoding -- B-Frames -- which improves compressibility significantly. The other key "Pro" features -- Psychovisual Enhancement, GMC, and Q-Pel -- are not as useful, and the consensus is that GMC is still buggy at the current DivX 5 release.
You'll find more information on Gordian Knot and DivX 5 encoding in the GKnot and DivX 5 forums.

Do NOT go back to winME... rather switch you encoding method. Xmpeg is known to be buggy in WinXP, but it's kind of outdated anyway.
I'd recommend you'll read through the Gordianknot guides as they are not as hard as they look at first! oh and please switch to divx 5 / xvid for encoding!
oh and please respect the forum rules:
1) Read up before asking! There are tons of guides, FAQs and each forum has a dedicated Q&A thread with additional info.
1a) Use the search function before posting. Chances are your question has already been answered.
12) How NOT to post in the forums:
...
Do not ask "what's best" because this question cannot be answered objectively. Each and everyone has their own view about what's best in a certain area. The best is what works best for you!
