View Full Version : Is it normal for CCE to reduce this much

I have a movie I am backing up and it was 4.98Gig after running DeCrypter. I put CCE (2.66.17) on 2000 min 3500 avg 9500 max. I did one pass vbr and it reduced the size to 1.92gig. Is the quality supposed to be as good with half the amount of space used? This just seemed to be a hugh reduction. Any comments or suggestions would be great.

Thanks,

1.92 gig is a plausible result. Some people like to try to put TWO films onto one DVD-R, but personally I think this is a waste of time because you lose too much quality and a blank DVD-R only costs one dollar/euro anyway!

I suggest that you have done nothing wrong, but that you should increase the bitrate and re-encode so that your .m2v file becomes at least 3.5gb. Then you can easily fit it onto your DVD-R with all the extras (if you want them, that is..), and you will still have very respectable quality :)

It's entirely up to you - what it really depends on is whether or not you are satisfied with the picture quality of the 1.92gb file. If you are, then don't bother to re-encode again

Thanks, for the info. In the case I used above what would you have set CCE to? If you dont mind me asking.

Thanks,

It's really a case of trial and error, because if the film has complex scenes, these will 'absorb' more bitrate, and give you a marginally larger final output, even though you have set an average bitrate. You could try using one of the bitrate calculators on this forum, but none of them are 100% accurate because there are just too many variables for each and every film. Once you have made your first pass, and CCE has created your .vaf file, then you will be able to more accurately estimate (using the calculations from the 'advanced settings') what your final file size will be. In my experience, CCE is normally a little conservative in it's estimates (which is a good thing really).
