View Full Version : Wont Run on Computer

I posted this on PC Hardware thread but would like others input. I successfully made an SVCD from the DVD Lord of the Rings. The three CD's play great on my standalone DVD player but about 7 minutes into any of the CD's played on my computer the system bogs down skipping frames and sound cuts out. I wonder if is a hardware problem because each CD plays so well on the standalone (Apex 600). My MB is a state of the art GigaByte GA-7VAXP. My memory is state of the art 256 DDR RAM. My HD is a 7200 RPM maxtor (not that that matters). However, my video card is an ATI Rage II Pro 128 with 32 MG SDRAM and my CD player/burner is a Lite-On
24102B 24X10X40. Ironically the DVD plays fine as do the VOB files made with DVD2SVCD, so it seems like it should be either the video card or the player. The CD/R isn't broken but is 40X too slow to play an SVCD disk (MPEG-2) file made with DVD2SVCD or do you guys think the video card is the trouble-or something else? The software is Powerquest 4.0 which plays the MPEG Mbps rate between 3.5 and 7.0 when I play the VOB file using my hard drive but is always less that 2.0, fluctuating between 2.0 and .75 when using my CD/RW drive. Any suggestions/ideals appreciated. I need to replace something but would like your best guess where to start. Thank you for all your help. This is the best board around for learning how to copy DVD's! PS. I did a search and found no messages with this problem.

Ok, you said that your VCDs aren't running correctly on your computer, but run correctly on your stand alone player...

Well, what program are you using to play your VCDs?

(Psst, cross posting, even with a reason like the first line in your post still is against forum rules. Avoid it or you could get striked)

to check if the problem lies with the cd drive you could make a iso from the VCD and mount it with Deamon tools. If it then works without skipping the source of the problem might be found.

PS: just another guess: check if DMA / UDMA is switched on for your drive /(don't think it should matter when playing SVCD /VCD though)

Thanks for your replies. Will not post to more than one Forum again. Just getting desparate I guess and mmisssed that on the rules. It makes sense. Sounds like everyone thinks the problem is DMA may not be turned on. I guess I am not sure how to tell this in Windows XP. Also, I have tried both PowerDVD and WidDVD. Problem occurred using both. I may try replacing my Lite-On CDBurner with a Cendyne and see if that helps. Thanks again for you responses. DVD2SVCD and the Doom9 Forum are both great. Thanks again and Merry Christmas to all.

... if DMA is on in WinXP:
go tro the control panel/ system/ device manager(on the hardware tab) / IDE ATA/ATAPI Controller right click primary or secondary IDE Bus and click Properties
there you will see if DMA is generally switched on for the device and what the computer is actually using!

Checked ATAPI as you suggested. One is on DMA Channel 5 and the other is on DMA Channel 2. I now believe that the problem has to do with Windows XP since I disconnected my hard drive and installed Win98SE on the connected drive with Powerquest and it played fine (see post on the PC Hardware Thread/Forum. I have posted this problem on the PC Hardware Thread. Don't want to violate the double posting rule any more. If you have any more ideas, please post there. Thank you all for your responses.

Thanks to your help this matter has been resolved. It appeared to be a DMA problem. Thank you for your help.
