I cover seminars with a camera and I want to fit about 12 hours of video on a single DVD, the quality of course is not a subject here because up till now I encoded the clips and fitted these hours of video on a cd (in wmv highly compressed format). So I am only asking if it is possible, with maximum compression available for PAL playback ? Oh the audio will be low quality stereo.

well, a quick calculation reveals that at 1mbit (avg), 12 hrs comes to ~5.4GB
so even at VCD quality you are probably not going to fit 12hrs on.
dual layer you could get away with just below 2mbit.

PS, i use (2 / 8) * 60 * 60 * number_of_hours == approx_size
where 2 is the mbit.

Thanks a lot , the equation is great help. I suppose i should start searching for a dual layer solution..

the only way to do dual layer is to write DLT's and go to a dvd manuf and get a thousand or so run off ;)

Compared to an 800 MB CD with a highly comprlessed WMV stream, a DVD R, even at an average bitrate of lower than 1000, will probably have better image quality, and certainly better functionality. You will be able to play the media in any stand alone DVD player (almost, within reason etc...), as well as a PC, and you can add the chapters etc.. in authoring. I'd say go for it.

WMV (or any MPEG-4) compresses very well at low bitrates, a hell of a lot better than MPEG-2 can do.
using 12hrs on a DVD-R would best be done at 1/2 D1 or 1/4 D1 (VCD).
best bet is to take a couple of minute sample and try some settings.
