View Full Version : mp3 to Mpeg I audio layer II

Hi all,

WinonCD 5 (and 6) has an option to make Music Albums. These are VCD's where the video part only consists of static menu's and the audio part is just like normal audio on VCD (mpeg 1 layer 2/ 224KB/s).
This is an excellent alternative for MP3, because even if your DVD player cannot handle MP3 CD's, it probably will handle VCD !
Now I have a lot of MP3's and want to convert them to this format.
But........ the conversion in WinOnCD is terrible slow .
So my question : is there a program that can do this fast ?
And in batch ?

Thanks in advance for your answers !!!

The main speed limiter is MP2 encoding.

AFAIK, i-Media Audio MPEG Pro is the fastest MP2 encoder available. On my P3@667MHz it reaches 10x encoding speed on the "fast" mode, but it hasn't batch mode :(

So you can decode MP3 to WAV using RazorLame in batch mode, and then encode to MP2 within i-Media one file after another.

If you want straight encoding, I think BeSweet can help you.
There is some other software that can transcode directly (as far as I remember), which is ... dbpoweramp: http://www.dbpoweramp.com/

Hi DJ,

Thanks for the tips.
I am trying dBpowerAMP at this moment with the tooLAME CLI plugin.
It converts 12 mp3's (50.6 MB) in 11 minutes.
Big advantage is of course the batch possibility.
WinOnCD takes almost 25 minutes for the same 12 mp3's.
<pause>

Loaded WinOnCD and...........
It starts encoding again........
A bit faster but still.....

Stupid program doesn't recognize obviously that the files are already in 224 KB/s stereo Mpeg 1 layer 2......

if winoncd reencodes anyway, just decode MP3 to WAV in RazorLame in Batch Mode (you just have to add the files to the list and hit decode, nothing extraordinary), then load the WAV files into winoncd so that it encodes them to MP2.
This will give you much better quality than encoding 2-times in MP2.

Yeah, I know that :-)

I just left the pooter for the night to do all the processing from the mp3's in WinOnCd. (Even the conversion to WAV is now not necessary).

It came up with an errormessage.....

I looked at the temp folder and saw it only did 10 songs before the error and they all had the extension : mpa.

So I will give the dbpoweramp method another try and manually change the mp2 extension to mpa. Let's see what happens then.....

The renaming of mp2 to mpa did the trick !

Working perfect and although the method is timeconcuming I can recommend this to everyone who has a DVD player that cannot handle mp3's !

Thanks for the help DJ !
