Last night I tried to play the Extended Lord of the Rings in my new Toshiba burner SD-R5002. Win2K didn't recognize the DVD (it asked to format it). So I attached my older Toshiba player SD-M1502 - they played. Now I think that I'll rip to my HD (ISO mode). Neither DVD Decrypter,SmartRipper or the other in the Gordian Knot package could do this. Decrypter didn't recognize the DVD as a DVD (just a bunch of files). SmartRipper couldn't unlock the DVD. Is this something new in copy protection? The Extended version of LOTR was released a month ago.

I have the special extended edition (R2) and had no problems in ripping it, I used Smartripper. Is it your first DVD you want to rip?

btw. I love the SEE of LOTR;)

No, I routinely rip a DVD to my HD when I rent one from Blockbusters. With our schedule we can rarely view one in 2 days. I usually use DVDDecrypter. Something's funny going on. I couldn't even play the DVD last night. The InterActual player it came with gave a CSS error. PowerDVD didn't recognize it as a DVD.

False alarum, in one respect. I had DVD Decrypter in ISO -Write mode. Once in Read mode, it recognized it as a DVD. SmartRipper still can't unlock it.

As far as the original DVD is concerned, The built in InterActual player gives a CSS error as does ZoomPlayer. Only PowerDVD handles it.

Don't even bother with SmartRipper (you can unlock the DVD by first opening it in a DVD player, i.e. PowerDVD). DVDDecryptor is superior in every aspect, so stick with it . ;)

New copy protection will should never occur because every DVD that comes out has to be able to play on the oldest DVD players on the market. This means that if your software DVD player plays it, you definately can rip it;) . Any authenticated DVD should be able to be ripped by DVD Decrypter.

(I hope what I just said is accurate...:( )
