I have a TV that is already hooked up to my PC screens output and a 5.1 surround sound receiver/system downstairs that I wish I could hook my computers normal sound output up to with the single s/pdif cord. I want to use it to watch non-dvd movies (avi, vcd).

I recently bought a Hercules Game Theatre XP and Ive come to find out that you can't really output the PCs normal wave out to the S/PDIF because an ac3 stream would have to be created. Is there anyway to create this stream and output it via the power-dvd s/pdif filter?? This could possibly be implemented in zoomplayer as it supports sound re-routing and what not.

If anyone knows any software work around of how to output PC wave to ac3 stream OR any hardware card that DOES do this....please lemme know!

thanks in advance

I fixed my problem from the help of review author for digital sound cards at www.techspot.com. Check it out, its got TONS of info on sound and video cards.
It was actually a relatively easy fix, Ill write it here for the help of anyone else with similar problems. To output all of the PCs sound to S/PDIF on the game theatre XP, goto the game theatre control panel/applet, navigate to the 'Other' tab, and select just 'Main outputs' under Digital output configuration. The mistake I had orignially made when trying this out though was that you need shielded audio cord. Or at least semi-shielded. I was using some shitty analog audio cord to send the ac3 stream over, which was not sufficient. So I bought a little bit better one for 6 bucks at radio shack and tada. No need for 30 buck cables....just not THE cheapest.
Also, the sound outputed on S/PDIF is just a digital stereo signal. Not all 5.1 or whatever channels. There is nothing you can do about this on this card and any card out there that I know of. BUT, if you have a decoder with pro logic, as I do, the decoder will expand the signal(read your receivers manual) to the other channels and it sounds just as good.

good luck,
