View Full Version : Curious about support for DVD2AVI in v1.77 and up?

Hello there!
I'm just curious about if/when an update to GKnot can be expected to support DVD2AVI in verions 1.77 and up? I installed v1.77.3 to be able to use my P-4's SSE2 functions, but when trying to open the project in GKnot it told me that it doesn't support the YUV format from DVD2AVI in versions higher than 1.76+ ?

Thank you!

Indeed this is most unfortunate. I second your request.

The .d2v file format was changed between v1.76 and 1.77.3 causing this problem. Don't be sorry over the fact that you can't use those files anyway, DVD2AVI does not do any processing at all, when you use it with GKnot! All processing is done by mpeg2dec.dll and this application is independant of DVD2AVI, even though it uses the project files created by DVD2AVI. MarcFD's version of mpeg2dec (http://ziquash.chez.tiscali.fr/) have improvements for P4. Use this with the DVD2AVI v1.76 to get best performance.

Does his YV12 version of Mpeg2Dec3 have these same P4 optimizations?

Yes, just set idct=5 to get the P4 version.

Very nice. Do you anticipate that this is just as good in quality as the other idct modes?

Also, what's your opinion on when the next update (YV12, mpeg2dec3, etc.) of GordianKnot will come up?

You can already use MPEG2DEC3 and AviSynth2.5a With GKnot. A quick rename of the DLL's, and you're on your way.

And I have learned not to expect any new versions of programs. Avery Lee posted a news update early 2001 (probably march or so) stating that VD 2.0 would be ready 'by the end of the year' and that it would be proceeded by v1.5! Neither has materialized yet, and it's anybody's guess if they will appear at all.

GordianKnot doesn't work with mpeg2dec3.dll, so you have to keep both copies (mpeg2dec & mpeg2dec3), and before you pass off to VDub you have to rename it in the AVS, furthermore you can't do the compressibility check in GKnot because of this, you instead have to do it in jonny's comptest.

This is all fine and dandy for me, but this is obviously too much for a novice to handle. If TheWEF has time to make programs such as AVSCompare or whatever it's called, I would hope he could at least update GKnot by now, since that's the program more people use.

I'm not demanding anything; I can work around the shortcomings of GordianKnot at this point. I'm just pointing out that more people will use GordianKnot ever than will use AVScompare.

Hi-

GordianKnot doesn't work with mpeg2dec3.dll

Sure it does. Vdub-Nandub encode just fine with it. Sure, you have to use Mpeg2dec.dll if you want to see the video inside GKnot. And if you want to do the compress test, then you can use either Mpeg2dec.dll or Mpeg2dec2.dll (which also has the P4 optimizations). And as you said, you can switch to Mpeg2dec3.dll just before encoding. Big deal. Rookies won't care about the different .dlls anyway, and more experienced users can switch around with no trouble.

I'm not demanding anything

Forgive me, but it sure sounded like it to me. Why do you think he developed the AVSCompare anyway, but to aid him in developing the next version of GKnot? I believe that little utility grew out of the deinterlacing discussion of a few days back. If you didn't see it, you can find it Here (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=39963).

You make some good points, but I'm afraid I'll have to take you up on your request for forgiveness, for you've surely (intentionally?) misinterpreted my observations as demands. I think the mistake you made was in thinking that observations based upon incomplete knowledge somehow translate into demands. It's a common mistake, so I don't feel especially maligned by it, but my kind and gentle forgiveness is offered.

Merry Christmas. :)

there is not much i can say to a comment like this.

it took 3 days to make AvsCompare.
i'm working on gknots successor since may(!)...

you don't need a program like "AVSCompare or whatever it's called"? well...

@TheWEF

I have the feeling that you have been much more active here at the forum over the last week(s?) compared to therest of the autumn. I must say it is very nice to see you back here, but it also makes me think in certain directions, like you have more time at hand now, both for coding and posting, or that you have something but want to 'join the action' so to speak, in order to get a feel of what features that are missing/not up to date. Whatever your reasons may be, the main point is that we who use your program is very satisfied with it, and hope that the successor will be just as useful, versatile, adored and bug free.

:D of course i do! but not as much as i would like to have. as soon as there is something that can be alpha-tested i will definitely contact you and ask for help... :)

Sounds great :D I just hope I don't repeat the misfortune I had when I installed InternetExplorer4.0beta . One of the first times I used the new desktop additions, I was about to delete a sub folder c:\program\whatever\sub and instead of just removing the sub folder it took away everything I had in whatever. No fun :(

Since then I've been a little cautios about using betas. ;)

Perhaps you like to keep the alphastesters to a minimum with the most experienced users. But if you'd settle for just a semiexperienced (compared to hakko and some others anyway) user feel free to send it my way once its ready for testing.

wow, um, you mean me saying this:

I'd love to see something that can show seperate .avs files opened side by side in one program, and even compare differences for you (with numbers) like differences in Chroma, Luminance, colors, etcactually encouraged someone to make a program like this?

I'm off to get .avs compare now
