Search the forum for AVICodec(I don't think it's on the main Doom9 website). It's a program that tells you what codec was used for an AVI both audio and video and if your system supports it.
Whenever I have encoutered this same problem the AVI turned out to have an OGG audio track that DVD2SVCD doesn't support.
If this is the case you will have to deumux it, convert the audio to wav and then mux it back together.

If that is the case look for a post on this by me in the audio conversion forum to see what you need to do. Just do a local search for Mark in that forum.

i used the AVIcodec program & it displays the following:

Video : 606 Mb, 1233 Kbps, 23.976 fps, res. 640*272 (2.21:1), DIV3 = DivX ;-) MPEG-4 (Low-Motion), supported

&

Audio : 94 Mb, 192 Kbps, 48000 Hz, 2 chan., 0x2000 = AC3 DVM, supported

which leaves me slightly confused

i will try to demux & convert to wav but do i then need to mux back together or can an audio track be opened seperately in AVI2SVCD?

Me too.
I think I remember a similar problem with an AC3 video and if I remember correctly a reboot solved it.

Make sure the video doesn't have any errors and it plays fine all the way through.

No if you demux you will need to mux. Easiest way I have found is Vdub direct stream setting.
