View Full Version : File offset issue with .mpv generated by D2S

I have tried to search for something related to this and failed. Plz forgive me if I missed it.

Using the methods recommended for re-encoding movies using D2S with CCE to reduce DVD9 movies to DVD5 when they are too long to simply chop the extras out with ifoedit, I have a strange issue with the time offset of the generated .mpv PAL video file.

Maestro reports that the video asset has a file offset of 01:00:00:00 ie. 1 Hour.

Everything comes out ok when authoring it in terms of audio synch etc. but to make chapter imports work from ChapterXtractor I have to add an hour to all of the timings.

Has anyone else experienced this?

With this post I have an impending sense of doom that I have missed something obvious and I'm going to get blasted. In my defense I have only done SVCD's up until now and I am currently experimenting with DVD creation whilst waiting for a burner to arrive. I have read all the related guides and searched the forums but I can't find this issue.

If all you're doing is chopping off extras with IFOEdit, where does DVD2SVCD come into play?

As my first post said the issue was discovered when I was re-encoding movies in D2S because they are too long to just cut them down in ifoedit.

Ahh, it does, sorry I misread. Can you blame me? It was really late :D

BTW - I've now seen 3 threads about this topic, 2 in this forum and 1 in another. What's the point of that? Just stick with 1.

One other thread was a different approach to the Authoring boys, that got no response and the other was an error today when I thought this post had disappeared (which I'm sure it had at the time as it was not in my subscribed threads in my user cp even if I went back 10 days, and everything else was).

AN Actual answer or even a suggestion on ANY of the threads would be nice !

Still no joy, has no one else ever come across this before? Seems strange to me because I'm not doing anything out of the ordinary. Surely there are other people re-encoding with D2S and then re-authoring with Maestro?

Have you thought of asking the guys in the DVD forums? Nobody here seems to be able to help you. I wish I could and would like to know the answer since I am getting my burner this week.

Unfortunatly, yes I've tried the DVD Authoring forum as well without success.

Your a very lucky guy getting a burner next week. I've been trying to get a Sony DRU500A and everyone in the World seems to be out of stock !!

Last week when I said to you about www.simply.co.uk having them, it turned out to be bullS**t as their stock system is up the shoot and it is showing stuff in-stock online when it isn't.

One day I hope :D

I'd be interested to know if you end up with this same issue when you give it a try.

That is the one I bought. I wanted to get it from Circuit City online since they are working with MSN rewards.
If you don't know, if you sign up with MSN rewards and buy from a participating online vendor (Circuit City, Kmart, Office Max) and use your MSN wallet they will give you a MSN gift card for 20% of your purchase up to $100 per account in Febuary for use in any of the vendors in the program. This lasts until December 22nd.
So this was $350 at CC and I get 20% back or $70, so the drive was $280 shipped. I just kept checking every day, every two hours and finally the got some back in. Two hours later they were all gone. If you are in the States I suggest you try the same thing.

Nevermind. I forgot you are over the Pond.

Mark, Fletch came back with a link to an older post in the DVD authoring section. Basically it looks like CCE does created this time offset (I find it to be an hour). You can do two things either add an hour to the chapter times that chapterxtractor creates or do this: (Originally posted by Fletch)
This is the method I use, its probably not the best way but it consistantly works for me -

1) Download DVD-R Multi-Calculator V1.02 ( http://www.dvdguru.net/index.php?menu=down )

2) Note the time on the wallclock in Maestro after you have dragged your video assett onto the timeline (For this example I will use 01:00:00:00) - DO NOT RESET THE WALLCLOCK

3) Enter this figure into the calculator you just downloaded (in the Chapter Delay Calculator section at the top) - Make note of the ms result (using 01:00:00:00 the result is 3600000)

4) Fire up Chapter Xtracter and enter this figure (3600000) in the offset box (far right bottom corner next to 'Last Chapter Bug Fix"..

5) Load up your IFO file and convert to Maestro format..

6) Import into Maestro and all your chapters will load up.

You can check the offset of the imported movie asset in Maestro once it has been added and parsed, right-click on it and look in the properties.

Thanks for the info.
It looks like I won't be able to play with my DVD Burner until I return from my trip. Two weeks and no computer. Man that sucks or is great, I haven't decided.

I was just playing around in CCE an I found the offset setting place. It clearly says Timecode 00=01000000. I am guesing the 1 is for 1 hour. I haven't tried to change anything in it yet, but if you have a recent encode try running CCE outside of DVD2SVCD, load the ECL file and then you will find the offset setting with the video settings button. Try changing it to 0 and see what happens. If you load the ECL that DVD2SVCD generated I think you should have the same results you had before.
I haven't tried this so I am only speculating it will work, but it sounds good in my head.

Originally I had wondered whether this was an issue from D2S in that it was passing the 1 hour offset to CCE, I thought maybe DVD2SVCD might pick up on it and comment but I guess he has far more interesting things to be doing :)

Thanks for the extra observations. I'm sure the 2 weeks away from PC's will be a blessing (maybe). Although the last time I was seperated from mine for 2 weeks for summer hols, I was (sadly) looking forward to getting my hands on it again.

I try out what you mention on the next one although in the long run if it was not something that can be amended in the D2S prog then the current fix for chapter importing would be quicker at the backend than using CCE etc. outside off D2S at the beginning of the process.

Cheers

Maybe it can be changed within DVD2SVCD, but seeing how this is sorta beyond the scope of the program problem I wouldn't hold my breath. I would like it to be changed as much as you, but sadly I have to consider what DVD2SVCD would think and I believe there are more pressing issues to deal with.

If you think about it though since we are going to be doing DVD's there is no need for anything DVD2SVCD does after CCE anyway. So it's a bit of a pain I agree, but at least it's not an audio problem.

According to the UPS tracking number my DVD Burner will be here Friday. Sounds great, but I leave Saturday morning. So no time to play before I get back.

Doh! what a waste, the rest of the civilised world is offering to cut bits of themselves off to get one, what timimg

The stupid ar*es at simply.co.uk keep switching between telling me that they are about to receive 50 units the next day, to then telling me when I ring back that they don't know why I was told that because they won't be getting anymore for 2 months. :scared:

Oh well at least I am getting some practice in at creating .img's of various flavours and saving them up, while diskspace permits.

You think that is nuts? Some fool made me a Mod. ;) Go figure.

I knew almost nothing when I first came here and now I know almost next to nothing. :) Seriously, though some of these guys here scare me with how much they know about this stuff.
