View Full Version : bbempg "can not read" from a file

It's at 33% through the huge MPG file.

Suddenly it stops (bbempg) with a little message box stating that it can not read from a file.

I have checked all files, they all read well. I have scanned the files for glitches or bad tracks, copied the files from one hard disk to another. The problem continues to be the same.

It is NOT a hardware problem or a "fault" with any file.

Where could the the problem be?

Thanks a lot for your help!

And I still can't find ANYBODY stating the same kind of problem that I have.

I have done several things:

1) I uninstalled dvd2svcd and deleted the directory. Then reinstalled it.

2) I have place a second hard disk drive. The directory for out of DVD2SVCD.exe is g:\tosvcd -- no numbers.

3) The movie is MOUSEHUNT. 98 minutes.

4) The program does everything simply perfectly, until it arrives at about 34% doing the multiplexing and cutting. The CCE encoded file is about 1.4 GB in length.

5) What I did is: click accept on the error box, then hit OK on the bbmpeg window. That made it continue with the second image. However, when it got to 34% of the second image, it did exacttly the same. I click on the accept button and then the OK button of the bbmpeg program.

6) I got two mpg files shorter than 50% of the huge 1.4 GB encoded file.

NOBODY in this forum has reported: bbmpeg error: "Error can not read from file"

with no file name. Nobody.

From what file can't it read and why? All the files it's supposed to read from ARE THERE (this I can tell by reading the bbmepg .ini files).

I let it finish: the result, two CD images containing ~540 MB of mpg, when they should have been 2- ~790 MB of mpg's.

If I missed the post, sorry a million times!

Get FileMon (free) from www.sysinternals.com and have it run during the encode (set a filter on bbMpeg.exe). This should give you a clue as to what file can't be read. What OS are you running?

Where is the info asked for in that post that is a Mandatory read before posting here?

I installed the program capable of mounting images. It mounted two images created by bbmpeg OK. That's how I got to know that the images only contained PART of what they should contain.

However, this marvel to mount hard disk drives did something to my win2k account: I was never able to recover my "configuration" data. So I had to recreate the environment once more.

This time, after two intents, I haven't been able to make CCE to finish. I have attached to this message the dvd2svcd log file. But of course, THIS problem is NOT related to the PREVIOUS problem.

By the way, I also installed the program that monitors files being accessed by a program and I discovered the bbmpeg is constantly trying to open 3 or 4 differente "files" (they were never visible) at an an odd location:

1127009 08:50:57 p.m. RunbbMPEG.exe:1060 IRP_MJ_READ*
C:\PAGEFILE.SYS SUCCESS Offset: 42250240 Length: 4096

C:\PAGEFILE.SYS SUCCESS Offset: 49717248 Length: 4096

pagefile.sys is the file that Win2K uses for the virtual memory. Why is bbmpeg trying to read this file?

1126868 08:46:32 p.m. RunbbMPEG.exe:1060 FASTIO_READ

That's a user's directory, located at documents and settings /
user / configuration / Temp / tmp_v2, tempa112, tmp_a3, etc.

What's bbmpeg trying to do there? The hard disk being used was
G:\tosvcd...

The thing is that I had been able to make quite a number of successful backups (about 35).

According to the Q+A BBmpeg has issues with special characters in the directory name.
It seems you have use _ in one of them. Get rid of it and try again if this is the case.

My operating system is Windows 2000 PRO. For many months I only had 1 hard disk and DVD2SVCD made the managed programs do their tasks with no flaw.

But one I day I added a second hard disk drive, and both drives were formatted so that Windows ME would also be able to access and use them.

The result was the nightmare that I have described here.

bbMPEG was capable of doing its job only when a FILE MONITOR program was installed and put to run while bbMPEG was trying to do its job. Then, about 95% of the time it would get to the end.

However, VCDXBuild (?) needed some sort of "slow down" if the second hard disk drive was the RECEIVER of the action and the main C: drive was the source. However I did notice that during all the time that bbMPEG was trying to do its job (cutting and muxing) there was continuous access to a TEMP directory on the c:\ drive, which would EVENTUALLY FAIL!

The drama is now over: I simply configured everything to happen in my original c:\ drive. Weird, stupid, call it anything you wish, but it is a fact.

I still use my second hard disk drive (4 times faster) to capture video (digital and analog). The SOURCE of the final video can reside on the second hard disk drive, but not the targets and intermediate files; these must reside on the c:\ drive, where the TEMP directory is located.

i hate to say this but if you would have read the q+a you would have known not to put special characters in your file.

that's the whole reason for the q+a. Not only so the mods dont have to answer the same questions over and over but so the users don't have to get the problems in the first place.

The one and only file name that I created MYSELF is the folder name:

c:\tosvcd

All the other folder names were created by DVD2SVCD itself.

I don't know what spatial characters you people are writing about. I can't see any, now or in the previous arrangement that didn't work.

What am I missing here?

Every single file that DVD2SVCD uses is created by DVD2SVCD itself.

c:\Program Files (English verion)

and

c:\Archivos de programa (Spanish version)

both have spatial characters. Are you saying that DVD2SVCD SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED to install in the regular folder for programs?

Are those the spatial characters you are talking about?

My directory (folder) structure is:

c:\tosvcd
audio
muxed
pelic
subs
video

I can't see any "spatial" characters in this structure. When I was using the second hard disk drive as the drive for these files to reside, that was EXACTLY the same structure, except on a different drive.

If the spatial characters you're writing about are those included here:

1126868 08:46:32 p.m. RunbbMPEG.exe:1060 FASTIO_READ
C:\DOCUME~1\ARTCOMM~1.GLA\CONFIG~1\Temp\tmp_v2 SUCCESS
Offset: 7102464 Length: 4096
1126869 08:46:32 p.m. RunbbMPEG.exe:1060 FASTIO_READ
C:\DOCUME~1\ARTCOMM~1.GLA\CONFIG~1\Temp\tmp_a3 SUCCESS
Offset: 3780608 Length: 4096
1126870 08:46:32 p.m. RunbbMPEG.exe:1060 FASTIO_READ
C:\DOCUME~1\ARTCOMM~1.GLA\CONFIG~1\Temp\tmpa112 SUCCESS
Offset: 3780608 Length: 4096
1126871 08:46:32 p.m. RunbbMPEG.exe:1060 FASTIO_READ
C:\DOCUME~1\ARTCOMM~1.GLA\CONFIG~1\Temp\tmp_v2 SUCCESS
Offset: 7106560 Length: 4096

I never had any control as to where this action should reside! No program ever asked, or I would have assigned c:\temp for the purpose.

However, RunbbMPEG.exe never failed when everything happened on drive c:\ --- the problems arose from using drive d:\tosvcd for doing EXACTLY THE SAME TASKS.

This should be made clear. What am I missing here?

Please, help! In the FAQ section one of the first parragraphs states as follows:

"Very Important: There is a bug in one of the programs used in DVD2SVCD that limits what you can have as a directory name. Do not use anything, but letters. No numbers or special characters. This will cause one of the programs to fail and you will need to start over again from the beginning."

No numbers? No way! I did make about 35 or 40 SVCD's using folder name "c:\dvd2svcd" with ABSOLUTELY NO FAULT!

You will have to redefine the bug, since the problems here only came up as I tried using a different hard disk drive than the system drive.

Wow! I would really appreciate any help in clearing the "mistery".

it could be the " " in your name (the spaces)

I owe it to this group to at least submit the results:

The problem was solved when INSTEAD of using 2 hard disk drives (one where the results would be placed and one where the source would be stored) I reverted to using the system drive alone.

Then everything went back to normal.

I am still using all the same files and directory names.

Somebody out there SHOULD ACCEPT the fact that bbmpeg HAS A PROBLEM doing things on hard disk drives different than the system drive, or different from the drive where the temporary files reside.

Thank you for your intentions to help.
