hi guys i did 2 encodes last night, 40 days and 40 nights (which said it was interlaced) and jay and silent bob strike back (which also said it was interlaced). I set 40 days and 40 nights to fast deinterlace (even though it didn't look @ all interlaced) and jay&sb without deinterlacing. When i woke up this morning 40 days and 40 nights was fine but... jasb was liike a really sped up movie it totalled 32.4mb (5min) instead of like 630mb. It's like it was encoding by scenes or something cos it looked like it kept switching ot the next keyframe or sometin . Ne1 got any suggestions..; mayb i should just enable interlace; but on the contrary i was worrieed it might destroy bits and pieces of the image if there's no interlacion to kill.

thanx

Hey shpanks-

Sounds like you encoded the Jay movie with the SelectEvery(280,14) line still in the .avs.

where is that ooption in the avs? wait a min.,.. does this have something to do with it?

# COMPRESSIBILITY CHECK
# !Snip Size has to be 13 for use in GKnot!
SelectRangeEvery(260,13)

does this mean i accidentally checked compress check?

Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back is part Film and part interlaced. I believe VOB #4 (split at 1 GB, the scene where they ran away from the cops and are at the diner) is interlaced, while the rest is Film (watch it the whole time in DVD2AVI, and you'll see the change, and then the change back to Film). You'll need to use Decomb(mode=1,threshold=50) for this (look at the Decomb documentation in the GKnot directory, it will explain this all, but trust me on using it for this movie ~~~> took me awhile to figure out what was going on with this movie).

40 Days and 40 Nights is not interlaced. 99% Film all the way through in DVD2AVI, except the credits which are interlaced (who cares though? just credits, encode it at 24fps).

how do u know that about 40d40n i previewed it in dvd2avi shouldn't it change from film to interlaced (but then again dvd2vai is said to b unaccurate)whats the best way to judge whether it's interlaced or not..?

well, first my DVDs are R1 NTSC, in case yours aren't. my copy did change from FILM to interlaced right when the credits start, like in my earlier post. no question.

as for the interlace question, for the most part no films that come out are 100% pure interlaced. most Hollywood movies need to be IVTC'ed to playback at 24fps, not 29.97 fps. the easiest way to do this is in DVD2AVI. that's the point of checking for >95% FILM. if it's less, you must IVTC using another method (Decomb being the best choice IMO). if you don't IVTC and just deinterlace, your video will have all the extra/unnecessary frames left in it from the teleclining process. this decreases overall video quality, and results in somewhat jerky playback.

anyways, you should be able to check Force FILM for 40Days&40Nights, aside from the credits. if you want to read up on interlacing, IVTC, and all that good stuff, check Doom9's guide pages, there is an excellent explanation of it all (very informative).

both jasb and 40d40n are r4 PALs. I can't b bothered redoing 40d40n i selected fastdeinterlace that should've taken care of what little interlacing may have been there and i don't need to ivtc it because it was prob sped up 2 25fps which is ok am i wrong? But jnsb thats another matter i'll check to c if @ that scene interlacing switches on than i'll follow your advice from there.

Hi-

does this mean i accidentally checked compress check?

Sorry I got the exact command wrong. But yes, it looks like you encoded the Compress Check .avs. But if you remove that line, then you can run the 2 passes. I've encoded Jay And Silent Bob before (NTSC version), although it was a while ago. After you open the .d2v in GKnot, advance frame by frame in a bunch of places to check for interlacing. If you see none, you should be OK. If you see some, you might try Telecide() (without Decimate) and open the .avs in Nandub (DivX3, right?) and scroll around to check if the interlacing is gone.

I'm not sure I'd use FastDeinterlace if I were you. Either use FieldDeinterlace, or open up the .avs, Load the GreedyHMA Plugin and use the GreedyHMA deinterlacer included.
