Hi there i have encoded about 7 divx movies which are ripped from dvd, and the qaulity of my movies are realy realy bad, its hard to even see the picture.

I havnt got a clue wot i am doing wrong as i am using gordian knot which setts the bitrate of the movie 4 me (2 cd"s) i usaly go 4, 640 x 352 for resolution and i dont use any pro features as my kiss dvd player doesnt support them.

Every time i do a compressibilty test, the test is all ways way ahead of the frame and pixels, is this the cause of my shit qaulity.

Any hints or tips on how i can alomst garantee perfect qaulity would be most apreciated, just a rook who has been trying to convert my dvd movies to divx 4 the last 3 weeks now and i dont even have 1 good qaulity movie can you help!!!!!.

Jamie,

I assume, by "DVD player" you mean a software player on your PC, rather than a standalone unit.

You might try seeing what your .avi files look like on an AVI player instead. Even Windows Media Player 6.4 (mplayer2.exe) can play .avi files created with DivX Pro, for example.

Your display may be set to only 16-bits of color depth. Check to make sure it's at 24-bits or 32-bits, since DivX video is 24-bits of color.

I don't understand what you mean by the problems you have with the compressibility test being "way ahead." Can you try to explain that more completely?

when i meen the cmpressibilty test is way ahead i meen the test comes back at say 0.679 and my frames and pixels are at like 0,388, and i find it realy hard to get close 2 the test.

sory 4 spamming by the way mate wont happem again.

i have the kiss dp-450 so i can divx on my dvd player

Use the b/p*f value only as an initial size estimate prior to your first compressibility test. After that, use the load percentage returned from tests and ignore b/p*f. Consider the b/p*f value as a modelled and the test as measured.

65% load factor should produce reasonable results. If you're not happy with the results in your player ... how do they look on your PC?

what do you mean by "bad quality?" macroblocks everywhere? a ringing effect around objects? blurry? artifacts? if your BPP is at 0.388, you should have a very nice looking video, that is an incredibly high BPP for a 2 CD rip. do you have the credits set correctly ~~~~> not at the beginning of hte movie, maybe the whole video is being encoded at the quality you set for credits? i'm assuming you're doing 2-pass mode, with DivX5 selected, correct? go back and follow through the guides step by step. there has to be a mistake somewhere. also, try uninstalling DivX5 and reinstalling it (also, don't use a cracked version of it ~~> can cause problems. use the regular DivX5, or DivX5 Pro w/ Adware, but use Doom9's hints to remove the Adware).

check your resizing method too. Bilinear should only be used if the video width is the same (after cropping, if it's 704, and you resize to 704x288, that is when you should use bilinear ~~~> only resizes in one direction, thus can cause jagged edges). SimpleResize is bilinear as well, so should be used in the same fashion. Bicubic is the most practical resizing, as it resizes in 2 directions. the different settings (Soft, Neutral, Sharp) affect how crisp the picture will be. Select these on the basis of your compressibility test. Neutral is good for most cases, but if your compcheck returns a % higher than 80, go with sharp bicubic.

also, make sure you don't have any noise filtering selected in Gknot either. this could lead to a blurry picture (not sure the problem, hasn't been stated specifically, so I'm covering everything).

another tip, instead of encoding the whole movie, just do part of it. so when you create your d2v from your VOBs, only select a small part of the movie (maybe 1 chapter for instance). load this into GKnot (under a separate profile), and set it up to have a similar bitrate as to what the entire movie would have. try some test encodes with this, so you don't waste many hours encoding a whole movie to find it came out crappy again.

all my effects are like blury like when you look at a light and it has that ring around it and some are realy scrambly.

Starting to think that it isnt my encoding i have my computer on 32 bit.

Just treid reinstalling divx 5.02 and i got this warning.

cannot find file regsvr32 (ore 1 of its components)make sure the path and file name are correct and that all required libaries are avdaiable

wot the hell does that meen ??

You might want to try uninstalling your divx codec, and reinstalling all of them. I had that error also. Makes sure you take out DivX4 codec also, because you won't need that anymore. You can also look at the GordianKnot guide here on Doom9. Following exactly what the guide says gives you a pretty good quality DivX movie and from there you can experiment with the settings. If you went for 2 or 4 CD, then your quality should be really good. Going for 1 CD only still gives you a good DivX video.

And don't use DivX4, use DivX5Pro or DivX3.

jamieuk-

I deleted the duplicate thread in the DivX5 Forum. There seems to be more action on this side. Please read the Forum Rules (http://forum.doom9.org/forum-rules.htm), particularly Rule 8 regarding Cross-Posting, and Rule 4 regarding Profanity. Thanks.

What happens when you open your completed movies in NanDub? Do they still look scrambled and blurry? If not, then it's your KSS Player. If so, then Acceler8n's suggestion is a good one.

Try enabling overlay on primary display, and set you colour in windows to 32 bit. I had a bit of trouble but it was my overlay messing around and my colour was set to 16 bit and made it look awful!
