I was wondering if anyone has any new information on the audio compression problems in VirtualDub. The problems I speak of are the lock ups and crashes that occur when compressing the audio of an avi file that has had sections cut out (for example removing commercials).

At first I thought the lock ups only happended when I tried to compress both audio and video at the same time but recently I've noticed it can happen even when video is set to direct stream copy. Audio compresses fine on a contiguous file but a file that has been edited causes a lockup that leads to an exception error.

This is a real hassle in that it requires two additional processing steps...extracting the audio to wav, compressing to mp3 using an external program, then muxing it back in with VD.

If anyone knows of a fix for this problem or an alternative (less time consuming) method I would very much like to know.

Thanks.

If you only experience the problem when editing then one workaround would be to do your editing in avisynth.
