I’ve been encoding video for a while now and notice my svcd’s have some visual effects I’ve looked these up and think they are the following mosquito effect (blurring & blockyness around faces and objects also I am getting a sort of blurring of colour especially noticeably again on faces the colours look like they have been blurred or merged althougth this isn’t constant throught the video and doesn’t seem to affect the sharpness of the image just the colours, so my question is how can I solve these problems .

If you are using CCE play with the Image Quality Priority setting.

From the CCE Manual:
As the value becomes closer to 0, a higher bit amount is allocated
to complicated images areas. As the value becomes closer to 100, a
higher bit amount is allocated to flat image areas. When the value is
close to 0, the mosquito noise at the edges (noise causing hazy part
along the edges, looking like flying mosquitoes) is less outstanding,
but the contouring noise (noise which looks like contour line patterns,
which appear in flat and wide areas, such as a dark background) is
more outstanding. The opposite occurs when the value is closer to
100.
Might sound confusing, but basically what you are talking about leads me to believe you want to raise the setting. I use 22-24 myself. I do not like the 17 setting.

Best to play around with a chapter or two and a CDRW disc.

Also if you can squeeze a bit higher bitrate out that might help.

We can't get anywhere without a logfile. Post it please. Also check that your bitrate isn't below about 1800, or else expect to get these problems.

Try using simple resize , or bilinear for smoother but less detailed picture.if you want sharp as bicubic or more than lanczos better have average bitrate above 2200 for 4/3 and above 2000for 16/9.
I personally mostly use bicubic or lanczos 3 or 4pass and image quality at 14 and sometimes anti noise not over 8.

DVD__GR I have to completely disagree with your settings, especially the use of lanczos at SVCD bitrates. If you read the Avisynth forum then you would learn that lanczos is suppose to be used for much higher bitrates.
Have a look at this thread where I asked some of the experts about it when I first heard of it.

I also think an image quality priority of 8 is much, much too low and your contouring noise will be off the charts.

For a good DVD source you shouldn't need to use hardly any noise filtering. Most use either 2 or have it off entirely.

In the end it's all personal preference, but your settings are way off of the normal settings that are used and I think would cause more problems then they relieve.

@markrb..
i should check the way i write thinks.
never image quality priority at 8..
i meant i use image quality priority at 15-17 and
if the result is not so good i enable the anti-noise filter of
cinemacraft.

i made resident evil 4pass lanczos at about 2100? bitrate.
I really tell you in a sony WEGA i could not tell the difference.
on the other hand there are some other movies that really cant get
them good with lanczos..
i dont know why.

Hey Mark!!!
THANKS for the thread,u really helped me.

i think depending of the noise that a movie has u can use lanczos or not..
