View Full Version : AVI: Sometimes PAL & sometimes NTSC

When encoding an avi with dvd2svcd, i have the framserver tab set to simple resize & DVD size. When the avisynth editor comes up, the width sometimes adds up to be NTSC size and sometimes PAL size. I need only NTSC. Is there any way to make it always 780x420 without having to encode in PAL then reencode from there into NTSC? Thanks.

If you want to just physically change the size then just edit the Avisynth file to reflect a NTSC size.
Personally I just encode it at whatever DVD2SVCD thinks it is.
It hasn't been a big deal for either of my DVD players.
Sure the size may be a little wrong, but not all that much and I don't notice it unless I look for it.
Are you making a VCD or a SVCD? From most typical AVI files 720 x anything is a bad choice of sizes.
If it's anything downloaded off the net pretty much VCD size of 352 is really all you are going to get a good encode out of.
I have started converting many downloaded AVI's and I wouldn't even consider reszing to anything more then VCD.
For a good encode those better be very high quality AVI's. Typically only a self capture would be able to give you quality that good.

If you take a low quality AVI, say any file under 1gb per 30 minutes resizing it to full DVD will look pretty bad. There just isn't enough information in the original file to fill in correctly the size you want to make it.
I make VCD's (352 x 240) out of 350mb files and that is barely passable.
It's a pretty simple formula if your original file is smaller then the file you want to create that is not a generally not a good thing.

don't get me wrong...i'm not particularly a newbie in that i've made many dvds from high quality (anything around 600x350) divx dvd rips (.avi's) that were in ntsc format. They look great as a matter of fact. I'm just trying to figure out how to put these pal avis into ntsc format so my dvd player can play them. I've been told now it may just be something to do with the video frame rate of the pal vs. what it needs to be for ntsc, not necessarily the size.
Thanks

If you think it's fine that is all that matters since you are the one that has to be happy with it. Each person has their own idea of what is good and I can respect that.
One thing I noticed though is that you said:
780x420
Did you actually mean 720 x 480? This is the correct size for NTSC video on a DVD.
I do believe the size is tied into the frame rate, but you can over ride the size by editing the AVS file right before the encode and just alter it. I started doing this the other day on my AVI encodes and seems to work just fine. If you want to alter the frame rate then there is some info on this in the Q+A.

specifically, the avi i am making to dvd-r is shallow hal, @ 25.0 fps and is 640x336. I guess the new question is, can i change the fps without getting the audio and video out of sync.
Thanks

sorry i posted that last one without reading your last reply... The q&a gave the lines for the avisynth editing. I'm gonna try this on tonight's encode. Thanks for the help so far.:D
