I've been using the anamorphic setting virtually since day one when it was available - but on replacing my dead Philips dvd player with a new Philips dvd player - the new one doesn't recognise the anarmorphic tag encoding. I can "trick" the new player by inserting a dvd then it reads the following anamorphic svcds.

It's not entirely satisfactory as I had so many problems with the old Philips - that it wouldn't be surprising if the new one stops accepting the "trick".

(I know I shouldn't have bought a Philips again but I like the 5.1 multichannel output I can achieve.)

So if any one knows how i can re-tag the mpeg header tag on the svcds - or any other ideas or solutions - they would be greatly appreciated...:D

Problem posts go in the Basic section.

yes you can : use DVDPatcher (kickme.to/dvdpatcher)

Use 4:3 for your 2.35:1 movies, the aspect result is exactly the same (just the anamorphic bit isn't set)

Well there will be major issues. The video will still not have those black bars. If you are going to be playing these on a 4:3 TV they will become stretched and distorted if you can do it at all.
The only way to get the black bars back is to re-encode the video.

If you are going to be playing this on a widescreen TV then I do not know what will happen if you can infact remove the 16:9 tag from the mpeg video.

I have never seen or used the above mentioned program so I can't confirm or deny what it will do.

wel try this : encode a DVD / Divx in both 4:3 and anamorphic (after each other ;-) and look closely at the AviSynth script. You will see they are both EQUAL !!!! So black borders / strectching will be exacly the same on both a 4:3 and a widescreen TV. The ONLY advantage for the anamorphic bit is some DVD players / TV's / Software players adjust the ratio automatically...

xp_eric yes you are correct the Avisynth files are the same.

What I was saying if you play a non anamorphic 16:9 video on a 4:3 TV it distorts becuase the DVD player will stretch the video to fit the screen as it thinks the video is 4:3. That same video played on a 16:9 WideScreen TV does not distort since the ouput TV is 16:9. Nowhere in the post does he say if it's going to be played on a widescreen TV or not.

Removing the 16:9 tag if possible will probably work on a widescreen TV, but will definately not work on a 4:3 TV. For it to work on a 4:3 TV you need to re-encode the video with the borders added.

or have a 4:3 set with a widescreen button which adds the borders (like all recent Philips set have). Even several DVD players can do this. Encoding like this has the advantage of "compatibility" on both 4:3 and widescreen sets...

thanks everybody for the replies - I have a philips widescreen tv - I dont plan to ever use a 4x3 tv set again.

Because I'm pretty slow with all things technical - I assume from your advice that I demux the burnt mpg's and reencode using dvdpatcher then remux and re-iauthor - OR can dvdpatcher do the reencode without me demuxing the video and audio streams??

Again - I'm extremely greatful for your help...:D :D
