Hi everybody,
I've to recompres an avi file 'cause it doesn't fit on a 700 mb cd. Should I recompress the entire file or maybe should I only add the "resize" filter and leave the previous compression?

You cannot change anything about the file (short of cutting off some piece) without recompressing. So "just a resize filter" as you call it would also require recompressing.

You could take out the audio stream, reencode that to a lower bitrate and mux it back into your movie, that way the video will remain the same.

If it's a movie, cut out the audio during the end credits, or just cut the credits off completely. this can all be done in VirtualDub in a few minutes. re-encoding will significantly reduce quality, which isn't good ;)

The audio file has already been encoded in mp2 which has a smaller size compared to mp3, but the whole avi is still to big. Maybe the solution is making a mode 2 cd?

First of all, mp2 is usually not smaller then mp - not at the same bitrate any way.

Step 1: Start by removing the start and end credits with virtualdub.
Step 2: Recompress the audio to 96 kbit mp3
Step 3: If that's not enough, recompress the movie by making a 2-pass encode with vdub. You can use my script for it (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=39517)

Read the guide on mode 2 CD's. It is not a good idea to do mode 2 avis.
