hiya, when i load a windows media 7 asf, the programs becomes really sluggish in responding, and estimates it'll take days to convert a 1hour file. and it's barely using the cpu as seen in task bar. anyone know how to fix this? what's causing it?

using version 2.58 and winxp.

Just had analogious problem. First few minutes were recoded normally, but then TMPEGnc started to recode in blocks by 10-20 frames with very long pauses between, and these pauses increases.

But this problem appears only with slower processors (350MHz MMX W98, 900MHz Athlon W2000). With 1200MHz Athlon problem disappears.

imho reason is, that asf Directshow filter is locked to playback speed. Just guess - if computer isn't able to recode film with this speed, TMPEGnc has several times to rescan file from beginning :confused:

In any case you can't recode film quicker than normal playback speed.

argh, i'm using athlon xp 1300+, and video is 320x240 resolution, so that may not be the exact problem. although i do agree it does seem as if tmpg encodes a few frames, that scans through video from beginning, encodes a few more frames, scans from beginning, etc.. which would explain the 2-days encoding time for a 1hour video.

Ayway this problem seems to be connected with recoding speed and codec's locking near normal view speed.

I noticed, that when recoding is going normally, it's all the time slightly ahead of "source position" time. In other words - if decoding time is say 5 min, source position is as example 5min 4 sec. And codec doesn't let to recode quicker.

If recoding is going to this "slow mode", then recoding time is slightly behind "source position" time from the beginning, and when this difference reaches some critical value, these long pauses start.

Recoding speed depends not only from source, but also from recoding parameters - output file format, filters in use etc. You may try some simpler recoding - without filters, just to CBR MPEG1 and check, if it changes anything.
