Hi,
I want to burn "LORD OF THE RINGS - SEE" onto 1 DVD. How can this be done. I have REALLY no idea, because until now I never made something like this. I know how to extract and re-encode the video stream (CCE)and remux it with the audio and subtitle streams (IfoEdit) - but how do I get the VOBs from 2 DVDs together as one (the movie is split on 2 DVDs)?

I've just done this - and like yourself didn't really know where to start.
I ended up using DVDmaestro to do it.
Once you have the 2 m2v files and the 2 ac3 files, load up DVDmaestro and follow the guide on doom9 on importing both your m2v files.
next step is to sync the audio - right click the 1st audio line and select 'create sync audio track'. you then select the appropriate ac3 file for the m2v file - and then it merges them into 1 ac3 file.
next step is to merge the video (had to do this in order to get the 48 chapters right) - can't quite remember what option it was, it was right click then something like 'merge mpeg files'
next step is to get hold of the chapters using chapterxtractor. save the chapters for the first part (see guide) then load up part 2. to add the chapters, you'll need to add a delay (approx 6078000
ms). add the data from part2 to the end of part one ready for importing into DVDmaestro.
you're now ready to create a new project with the merged m2v file, merged ac3 file and merged chapter file.
i hope this helps :)

If you are using the CCE/Maestro combination, as I would, be sure to extract the subtitles (elvish translations/titles) if they are not burned into the video. This is necessary with the region 4 'normal' version anyway.
Personally I don't think it's a good idea to put that long a film on 1 DVD-R. It's ~200 min isn't is?

Thanx to everyone. You helped me a lot!
To Matthew: the movie is 217 minutes long (according to the cover - have not yet watched it...). I hate to change DVDs when watching a movie, so I want to burn it on one DVD.
To Goldfinger_007: at what data rate did you re-encode the movie? You would save me a lot of time if you would give me a concrete value... Thanx

Use a bitrate calculator and use the highest value you can. It won't take too long and you'll have the best quality you can get.
Also if you're going to put a movie that long on 1 DVD I highly recommend changing the resolution to 352*480 (576 if it's PAL) or else it will have alot of macroblocks.

What encoder did you use?
What were your settings?
Did you just have the movie with 1 audio and 1 subtitle track?
This is a pretty high action movie, so to fit a movie that came out on 2 Dual-layered DVDs onto 1 DVD-R without losing something is pretty amazing.

Mr. Tinkles:
used Q=60 min=2000 max=9000
after authoring, everything came out at 4.35Gb (this was for the PAL version btw)

Thx for the reply!
I use these settings for all my converted DVDs. But I want to mux all languages and all subtitles and so I think I should lower the max value - maybe:
Q=60 min=2000 max=8000
- how low can I go with the max value without a visible quality loss? Has anyone experience with that?

Has anyone done this extended edition of LOTR successfully on 1 DVD-R with subtitles?
I don't have Maestro or Scenarist so has anyone done it with IfoEdit or some other program?

Guys.
Why bother with all of DVDMaestto, Senarist...cost of thousand of dollar to back up your DVD?... This does not making sense to me.
Unless you are illegally obtain the software...
Why do all that?
Here are the software you need to bring DVD-9 to DVD-5.
- DVD Decrypter
- DVD2AVI 1.76
- TMPGen
- IFOEdit0.88 and IFOEdit0.95
- ReMpeg
- VOBEdit
If you do it right, you should have a perfect DVD-R which contain everything in DVD-9
Please do not tell me it cannot be done, I did over ten movie this way.

FWMan,
How come you use both IFOEdit0.88 AND IFOEdit0.95 and TMPGen AND ReMpeg?
Could you provide a step-by-step guide for your process?
Thanks! BP

Here are the steps
Using DVD - Ripping entire DVD
Using IFOEdit0.88 - Make a TMPG template of each VOB.
Using DVD2AVI 1.76 - Make D2V file for each VOB.
Using TMPEG - Compress video stream
- Force picture type and load TMPG template.
- two pass.
Using Rempeg - Remux m2v back into each VOB.
Using IFOedit to correct IFO files.
There you have a DVD-5, which is identical to DVD-9

I also took the 2 dvd extended version and made one disc. I made each disc a title on the new disc. This way I did not have to merge anything and you just load the appropriate chapters to each movie set in Maestro.. It seems much easier to me.. You then just tell maestro to continue on set 2 when set 1 finishes.. Very nice.

FWMan,
Thanks, I'm assuming where you say "Using IFOedit to correct IFO files." that it's the latest one 0.95, is that correct?
Also you state "Using IFOEdit0.88 - Make a TMPG template of each VOB." Can you use IFOEdit 0.95 to do that?
Thanks again for the prompt reply, I'm new to the DVD burning scene.

IFOEdit0.88 creates a TMPG template, which ready to load into TMPG, where IFOEdit0.95 does not. With IFOEdit.95 you have to use Exel, and Word... to correct the format.
This is the reason why I want to use IFOEdit0.88 for the template.
You may not need the IFOEdit0.95 to correct IFO files, you can use IFOEdit 0.88 to do this job, myself I have not use IFOEdit0.88 to correct IFO.
BTW there is two DVD writers will write 2x with Ritek media, which only burns in Pioneer at 1x
Toshiba SD-R5002 ( 2x writer)
TEAC DVW50E (4x writer - OEM from Pioneer)
