View Full Version : Safe to let DVDDecrypter extract ac3?

Hi.
Is it considered "safe" letting DVDDecrypter extracting the ac3 audio to seperate files? I've always used DVD2AVI to demux it from the vobs, but it'd save some time if I could do it in the initial ripping.
How will the delay be affected? When using DVD2AVI the delay will be in the filename. Should one use the delay value found in the stream information?

If I'm going to rencode, I always allow decrypter to pull out elementary streams. video & ac3, then after rencoding the audio resyncs in maestro or spruce.

Yes, you can demux audio with DVDDecrypter, it just puts the audio into another file instead of streaming it to the vob. And yes, you should use the delays in the info file.

The delay times will also be in the files names when ripped with DVD Decrypter.

Is this for all audio formats? or just for ac3?
If it's for all, then I must be doing something wrong.
I let dvd2avi extract the ac3, then besweet to create a CBR mp3 with wave header. Everytime I use the delays, by the end of the movie something is out of sync. If I leave it as 0, it works fine. I use virtual dub to put the audio/video together and leave it at the default for interleave box.
Thanks for any info.

All audio formats? Unless your dvd uses pcm, ac3 is about the only format dvd makers will use. And yes, if it gives you a delay, you should use it. MP3 in vdub might be the problem, although CBR should work fine. I'm not quite sure how dvd2avi handles multiple inputs on the delays, but it's safer in my opinion to open the vobs in besweet one by one, convert the audio to pcm wav (with the delay) and then batch mode those to mp3 or whatever format you want.

Thanks Suzahara.
I just started using decrypter (switched from smartripper) and the title of this thread caught my eye. Just getting back into ripping after some time away from it.
The reason I asked is I have read people use other formats (ie convert the ac3 to ogg, mp3, wav, and even use ac3 directly). So I was wondering if this delay was for the ac3 mux.
Since it was mentioned here we should be using the delay, and I'm not, I was just wondering what else I was doing wrong. Maybe the 'audio skew correction' in virtual dub is not the same thing as the 'set delay' in besweet. But I have been pleased with the rips I have done, and they seem to be in sync.
I will try your suggestion on my next rip.
Thanks again.

any reason not to let BeSweet to the whole process ?
after all, it can accept a list of vobs as input, produce mp3 (or mp3wav) as output, and assert the delay automaticly (-d auto).
dvd->mp3 in one shot.

Does BeSweet figure out the delay for each vob in the list and apply it accordingly?

the delay is calculated on the first vob.

It feels a bit unsafe letting Besweet handle that. Sure, thanks to the stream info from DVDDecrypter you know everything that's in the vob, but still hardly with 100% certainty.
The more steps you throw into one, the harder it is to find possible errors.
It should be a few minuters faster letting faster letting DVDDecrypter demux the ac3.
Just my 2 cents...

Hmm, good way if you're doing multipart vobs from the same title, but often on anime dvds I like to include textless intros, so that really doesn't work for me since I have multiple delays. Probably would in this case though.
