View Full Version : Missing mp3 codec in Flask...FAQ didn't help

Hi all,

I have tried both FlaskMPEG and xmpeg and with both programs, I don't have the mp3 codec listed. Both the guides and FAQs say to use mp3 instead of DivX audio when encoding to DivX. I tried what the FAQ said with respect to reinstalling the DivX codec, (both version 4 and 5, one at a time), and no luck. The FAQ also mentions a program to run called register_divx.exe, but I can't find that.

Can anyone make any suggestions for me to get my mp3 codec back???

Thanks,

Mike

You could install the LAME ACM codec.

The divx3 codec is the one that reinstalls the mp3 codecs. Reinstalling that should work. Restart then try again.

Here's something to clear up some confusion on the ACM MP3 codecs.

When you install/update WMP (7 and above), it overwrites your current MP3 codec with a version of the Fraunhoffer MP3 codec that only encodes up to 56kbps. This is the legally licensed version of the MP3 codec. The "Radium" codec is a hack to the Fraunhoffer Pro codec which gives you full encoding features (up to the 320 limit). This installer is, uh, technically illgeal. The DivX 3.11a installer, which is a zip which the DLLs and the installer, includes the DivX Audio codec and the an older version of the Radium MP3 codec. Again, both illegal, but so what.

I suggest using the Radium MP3 since it's less buggy, and DivX Audio is merely a hack of WMA v2. WMA v# is by far the worst sounding compression that I've ever heard. The common misconseption is that it sounds better than MP3 at 64, which it does since MP3 at 64 is nearly inaudible. But MP3 at 128 will always beat WMA at 128. I won't go into detail as I've always done before since... but anyway, don't use it. It sounds like crap, it operates like crap (many, many bugs), and it confuses people who then come to me and ask all the time "why doesn't my movie have sound?".

Radium is a good hack, LAME is even better but harder to set up. LAME is best in its standalone encoder since it has more updates and is less buggy. So install Radium. If you get two MP3 codecs listed, then uninstall the "advanced" one (that's the crippled WMP codec) and keep the "pro" one.
