View Full Version : Strange problems with Spiderman...

I've been ripping DVD's for quite a while now but now i've stumbled onto a problem that i can't seem to solve.
I always use the same method to rip a DVD and i've done more than a hundred like this without any problem:

1) I rip the complete DVD to harddisk with DVD decrypter.

2) I examine the VOB files with VOBedit to determine which VOB files contain the main movie

3) i fire up IfoEdit, select the IFO file that contains the main movie, press VOB extra and strip all unwanted audio streams and subs. I check all the right options (remember i've done more then 100+ movies like this)

4) most of the time the movie is now small enough to fit on 1 DVD-R and this is also the case with Spiderman.

The Problem:
--------------
Something strange happens when i rip spiderman. When i do 'VOB extras' i usually end up with 3 or 4 VOB files which are 1GB in size and a last VOB which is smaller.
with Spiderman however the first two VOB files are 1 GB, the third is 760MB, the fourth is 1GB and the last is about 300MB.

I have never gotten anything like this and i always strip with the same options.

when i play the DVD on my computer there is no problem. When i try to play it on my regular DVD player, everything goes fine untill chapter 21. After that everything goes beserk and the movie suddenly jumps back and forth between a bunch of different chapters. When i check it with VOBedit, it is exactly at the end of the 760MB file that the problems begin.
I've tried just about everything (and offcourse if did not forget to do GET VTS sectors). I even let Ifoedit make a complete new set of IFO files, based on the VOB files, but it is always with the same result. Im' getting quite desperate...

Has anybody ever experienced this or does anybody know a solution ?

I backed up Spider Man some days ago without problems using the same steps that you mention
(FULL SCREEN EDITION) and IFOEDIT 0.91

Strange things indeed...

Perhaps this is something that Derrow can answer:
If you start with a fileset like this:
VTS1_1.VOB (1GB)
VTS1_2.VOB (1GB)
VTS1_3.VOB (1GB)
VTS1_4.VOB (1GB)
VTS1_5.VOB (550MB)

And you rip out some audio streams and subs, how can you get a result like this:

VTS1_1.VOB (1GB)
VTS1_2.VOB (1GB)
VTS1_3.VOB (760MB)
VTS1_4.VOB (1GB)
VTS1_5.VOB (320MB)

What can be the reason for this ? Is this at all possible ? Shouldn't all files be 1GB except for the last one ??

PS: I tried IFOedit version 0.91 and the very latest version also...

It sounds like your ripping the hole DVD “the original files, instead of the main movie?

Personally I rip all .vob’s as one big file. Of course this requires a NTFS formatted H.D.
& let IfoEdit split then into 1GB files.

YES this movie will fit on one disk.....! on menus movie & 6ch .ac3.!

First i rip the complete DVD to my harddrive, maintaining all original files and sizes.
This gives me the situation that i described above:
four 1GB files and one 550MB file. Offcourse there are also VTS2, VTS3 ,ect... VOB files, but VTS1 contains the main movie and that's all i need.
I use Windows XP and have my harddisk formatted with NTFS, but that shouldn't matter in this case.
It has always worked before. I just can't understand why i end up with a 750MB file in the middle ?
On my PC it doesn't cause a problem, but my standalone DVD player flips at the end of this file...

The only thing that I can think of is you must of edited something when
you were in VobEdit.

Try using Smart riper, you can rip just the, main movie, main angel, & the 6ch .ac3 via
stream processing....................!

That way you won’t have to strip much in IfoEdit...............! acutely you don’t have to
strip any thing, but I all way check the strip streams box & keep the 6ch audio so
IfoEdit will adjust the Nav Packs, ect & most importunely the (2048) 2k block size..........!

This 2k thing has been a issue, I thinking of reformatting one my drives because of it.
Not 100% sure but think, by using DISK MANAGEMENT in XP you can format
with a block size 2048.

I don’t recommend this for your main drive C:

I already tried it with smartripper in the way that you describe, but it leads to the same problem: smartripper also gives the 760 MB file problem....

I did found a workaround to this problem and that is to strip nothing at all but to split the DVD over two DVD-R. I just finished that and it seems to work now.
So, as far as i'm concerned it's all ok now: I have a working version of the movie.

However i would still like to know what the problem was with Ifoedit when i tried to strip some streams, certainly in regards to the 760MB file that showed up in the middle.

Derrow, if you read this, can you please let me know if this is normal in some circumstances or is it a bug in Ifoedit ?

Hello to all,

Well Spiderman was the most easy one to do.
This I how I done it:

- Startup DVD Decryptor 3.1.4.0
- Select file mode and decrypt all the files to HD.
Startup Ifoedit and load the ifo from main movie and select strip streams under VOB extra's
Select:
- Make New Ifo's
- Remove Angle Pointer
Press strip it and select:
- Audio
- Subtitle
When done, copy the sub colors from the original ifo into the new ifo that Ifoedit made for you and do a Get VTS Sector.
You will see that the movie is just over 4.3 GB -> write it to a DVD-R and have phun !
Best regards,

Kenwood

Exactly the same problem here. What is worse PowerDVD just hangs after the 768MB file.

Did nothing different than with the previous 50 or so.

Tried the remove angle -> no luck

So anybody an idea what can cause this...

This is all fine if you want the movie only, but i have had real bitch of probs with this film, i've backed up over 200 films now, most with all the extras and this is just giving me pure headaches.
