Hey... maybe I am not following how this thing works but...Has XviD been ripped off again?

I was just browsing my notices for new news alerts on Yahoo and noticed that today BroadQ announced it's "QCast Tuner" and lists that it supports XviD!? Has the Xvid decore been ported to the PS2 or does the PC handle it? Does it just support a mp4 profile and thats why they state it plays Xvid? and if so are they gonna release the source?

News Release: http://biz.yahoo.com/bw/021119/190321_1.html
Xvid Listed: http://www.broadq.com/qcasttuner/

Curious...

I would learn towards Simple Profile decoding, since they list the most popular variants of Mpeg-4 right there.

Furthermore, I fail to see how this company can even be seen as remotely serious since they clearly advocate piracy in this 'demo' video right here:

If you watch carefully at the directory listing, you'll see things like:

Swordfish.DVDRip.DivX-Dominion

It's much more that likely they ripped off libavcodec, seeing as it supports MSMPEG4/MPEG-2 and would need native PS2 assembly. Well, libavcodec only has PS2-optimized iDCT code, but it's known to compile and function on the PS2.

Seeing as ffmpeg/libav/libavcodec are licensed under the LGPL, it's entirely possible that they're using libav/libavcodec compiled unmodified and loaded as libraries, which they would be allowed to do.

They would have to rewrite parts of libav to support seeking (which I hope this thing can do), but they're still only under the obligation of releasing their modifications to libav/libavcodec, not the rest of their code.

There were announcements over at Divx.com. And it has even been plastered all over their front page. If the impression I get is correct then there is a partnership between the two. To some extent. Which leads me to believe that they are not using Xvid code but perhaps Divx instead. Having said that it would be interesting to see a dissasembly comparrison. As any preying upon opensource or violation of license should not be tollerated. I sincerely hope it is an honest project. Anyone up to the task? ;)
