Hi there....

Starting new thread for this.......

I'm having problems making workable DVD-R's with my DRU500A, but I think It's because of my crap Vivastar medias. Only 5 of 50 or so discs were accepted by the drive.. Now...

I have several other brands of DVD-R to try but I'm having problems with even reading the medias in the SONY that it writes.

It writes DataWrite (even at 2 x speed) They're 1 x speed certified.

So I'm asking for some help with which settings I should use in Nero 5.5.9.17 to make a normal DVD-R with lets say 5-6 DivX movies or any data 4.38 GB disc. Not playable DVD movie copy or anything That I got to work...

What type of disk should I make when the selection pops up. DVD (ISO) , DVD (UDF) - DVD (ISO/UDF) ect. ect. Help!!!

The discs I have made so far not even the SONY will read back...

And what's the UDF version 1.02, 1.5 and 2.0 ??

Kind Regards

Allan, Denmark

sasquatch,

seems you've got the same problems as me then I just brought ten of these ALL4MATS DVD-R disks from shopink.co.uk. I purchased these because they say theyr'e 'ritek' manafactured and I've read elsewehere these are reliable with this Sony. Anyway I did some experimentation burning MPEG and DIVx films onto the media as ISO, UDF and ISO-UDF in Nero 5.9.9.17. Anyway all the resulting DVD's would 'kind of work' although sometimes they would crash explorer. And it was very difficult to watch the MPEG films using Media Player Classic. Seemed to work ok in PowerDVD 4.0 though (using play media files) mode. Basically the disks were difficult if not impossible to read using my laptop DVD drive or the Pioneer A04 at work. However I've yet to try absolute non-media files data DVD-R writing. I'll try this tonight and let you know how I get on. I think this is probably a media issue. I have 1 Sony CD+RW which i'll try the same thing with I also have a blank TDK I can try one of these burns on too.

Ahh reliable media and a Sony DRU500A that's all I want!

OK all problems solved now. Yepeee :D :D :D

All my DVD-R's is working perfect now.

Simply tryied some different medias and found out that

DataWrite from www.cdr-by-mail.co.uk works 100%. They are not expensive either £0.86 i think.

Also found out that the brand called "Neo" works. They don't have them there, but here in Denmark they have them (very expensive) but they also work.

Now All I have felt to test is to find some "medium cost" DVD-RW or DVD+RW.

Have ogny tryied the SONY DVD+RW which works ofcause and one White Label DVD-RW (Actually yellow on the top).

Kind Regards

As I was saying I had problems with these data CD's I burnt being read back by the Sony DRU500A, however when I use a Liteon DVD Drive to read them back theyre all fine?!?!

Strange,

I think Sony capped the DVD Ripping speed of this Drive, and therefore the DVD Read speed is also locked at 2x which means that should you start messing about with the playback then issues arise. I'll keep this drive for burning, and stick with a decent reader to read and watch DVD's

the DVD video and dvd +/- r/w playback is all limited to 2x, the dvd rom reading *pressed) is maxed at 8x, those are advertised specs for the drive, and cdr labs confirmed their validity

Thanks,

I think this sucks as the drive is marketed as something that can do anything CDR and DVD-R+R-RW+RW related. I mean I require another DVD player in my machine now,(thankfully I have an old creative DVD) but then that's life I guess! You can't seriously watch DVD movies in this drive (unless you intend to press play and leave it running). As soon as you try fastforwarding and rewinding etc. The drive can't handle it and the application will die!

>DVD video and dvd +/- r/w playback is all limited to 2x

This will be addressed by the 1.0e firmware upgrade that Sony will issue by December 9. Over at vcdhelp.com there was a thread reporting that Sony has sorta recalled the DRU 500a, in that places like Buy.com are not restocking until Sony releases the same burner with the new firmware. This has been confirmed by a poster who knows people at Sony.

I'm a 500 owner, and await the 1.0e release most eagerly. If it doesn't deliver, mine goes back.

I just found out the firmware upgrade is available.
