Greets all this is my first post so please bare with me. I am interested in re-encoding movies with no menu's or extras all i want to do is take the movie, keep the best quality and fit it on a dvd-r. I have been browsing through the guides but none of the guides deal with exactly what i want to do. Can someone give me a few pointers (i'd like to use cce if possible)

Just use TRILIGHT's DVD-9 to DVD-5 guide but ignore the bits about extras and modifying the IFOs produced by Maestro, etc. It's worked fine for me, the only exception being that the guide is perhaps lacking in its treatment of audio delays.

ok starting to get the hang of it only problem is how do i know what bit rate to set so it will fill the entire 4.7 gb. See i'm used to encoding SVCD's now that i have a dvd burner i no longer will be making vcd's. With VCDS i use FitCD and it gives me all the info i need. Is there a calculator for dvd-5 or is it trial and error to this point :(

I have Gordon Knot (for divx) installed and I just use that, it's accurate =)
You have to leave a bit for overhead though (the vobs are larger than the sum of the video and audio streams), it seems to increase with the length of the film. I leave ~115,000,000 bytes and that seems to be fine (had to leave a bit more for LOTR though, because it's 170 mins).

I always start with looking what the total size of the VOBS is after ripping the main movie only with DVDDecrypter. Then i use IfoEdit to process the VOBS stripping Audiostreams, subpicturedata etc. that i don't need. AFTER this, If you're lucky (8 out of 10 times I am), you'll be left with a DVD-content that stays below the capacity of a DVD-R.
That means in such cases, you can simply burn the files onto your DVD-R using Nero or any other burner.
The advantage of this method is that you keep the ORIGINAL DVD quality on both film and audio.
If you're not so lucky, then use the methods describes in DVD-9 to DVD-5.
All of this is available in the guide:
"How to keep only the main movie of a DVD"
